great bearing on physical, social,
economic & aesthetic values
•Can contaminate air & water which
are main reason behind air & water-
borne diseases
Flies, Cockroach, rats may cause the following
diseases:

1. Dysentery: an instestinal inflammation


primarily of the colon which cause mild to severe
stomach cramps & severe diarrhea with mucus or
blood in the stool/feces
> cause may be due to Shigella bacillus
Amoeba
2. Cholera : symptoms of watery diarrhea & severe
dehydration
> cause: vibrio cholera

3. Typhoid fever: an acute(sudden) illness associated


with fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain
> cause: Salmonella enterica typhi/paratyphi
4. Leptospirosis: may cause multi-organ infection
like the kidney, liver, lungs & meninges of
the brain causing kidney, liver or respiratory
failure & meningitis or death.
> cause: Leptospira interogans bacteria
5. Dengue fever or DHF: a painful, debilitating
mosquito-borne disease
> cause: Dengue virus
6. Scabies: infestation in the skin which causes sores,
severe itchiness & red rash
> cause: Sarcoptes scabiei (mite which can live in
human skin for months & burrow to lay
eggs)
7. Trachoma: contagious bacterial eye infection which
can lead to blindness
> cause: Chlamydia trachomatis
SCABIES
8. Anthrax: infects the lungs, skin, intestines & thru’
injection
>cause: Bacillus anthrasis
Lungs: by inhalation – flu-like, very fatal
Skin: raised, itchy bump like insect bite w/c may
be painless sore w/ black center swelling
lymphadenitis
Intestinal: N/V, abdo. pain
Injection: redness in inj. site multi-organ failure
9. Parasitism:
> Flat worms:
flukes, tapeworm
> Round worms:
ascaris, pinworm, hookworm
10. HEPATITIS
Hep. A – caused by Hep. A virus
- cause inflammation of the LIVER
- transmission: from infected urine, stool,
excreted mucus from a carrier of hep.

s/s: fatigue
sudden nausea/vomiting
abdominal pain(upper Rt. Side)
clay colored stools
yellowing of the skin, mucosa, sclera (jaundice)
intense itching
loss of appetite
low grade fever
dark urine
joint pain
More serious type of Hepatitis:
Hep. B – caused by Hep. B virus
- can be mild to serious infection
- transmitted thru’ blood, sex, used
needles, razors, nipper, or from
mother to child
Acute Hep. B – last for < 6 months
Chronic Hep. B – last for > 6 months
Hep. C – caused by Hep. C virus
- may be mild to severe, a lifelong illness
- major cause of liver cancer
Note: a person can be asymptomatic but they can
be a carrier of the virus

11. Bronchial Asthma/ Status Asthmaticus:


> can be triggering factor due to unpleasant
odor emitted by garbage
12. Other Lung Infections:
 Tuberculosis
 Bronchitis
 Pneumonia
 Bronchiectasis
 Upper respiratory infections (Sinusitis, Rhinitis)
