CONCLUSION
● The influence of the nature of the nitrogenated ligand in the precursor complex on the catalytic activity for the
oxygen reduction reaction was investigated.

● After pyrolysis, all of the catalysts had a similar Nitrogen speciation profile. Consequently, it is not possible to
identify whether the Pyrrolic-N or the Pyridinic-N are responsible for the catalytic activity.
● The catalysts with 6 membered ring ligand precursors had better electrochemical properties, as well as higher
TGA retention and higher superficial N content.
● The results discourage the metal particle active center hypothesis. (No current correlation with metal content)

● Further studies with Co-(CO2-Pz) MOFs took place, reaching levels comparable to those of Pt 20% in test fuel
cells.

Research Plans
in
BIG/NSE

23
Proposal 13- Carbonylation and Carboxylation of Alkanes in Fluorinated Solvents
or scCO2
● Main objective: Design of a scCO2-soluble binuclear Ir-Rh complex for the coupling of Alkane
activation and carbonylation/carboxylation reactions.
● Using already proven behavior for Ir (activation of alkanes) and Rh (carbonylation of Alkyl
Ligands) .
● Adding fluorinated moieties (RF) to impart solubility in supercritical CO2 and Fluorinated
solvents
● Controlling the distance between the metal centers by adding tension to the bonds using
different (progressively bulkier) side chains (R).
● Studies to understand the nature of interaction between the RF fragments and fluorinated solvents
will be carried out via 19F-NMR and DFT calculations.
● Mechanistic studies in fluorinated solvents will be carried out via NMR , FTIR, and Raman
Spectroscopy as well as in silico.

Proposal 9- Additive manufacturing (3D printing) of chemo- and biocatalysts with
control over spatial composition and dynamic functionalities

● Main objective: Development of Additive manufacturing techniques for an array of catalysts

including metal NPs, Metal-organic Complexes, and Enzymes, with a focus on maximizing
catalysis performance through optimization of 3D geometry.

● Two work proposals are put forward:

● WP1: Printing heterogeneous catalyst-loaded slurries by DIW.

● This work proposal will center around obtaining optimal ink rheological behavior for the
proposed catalysts , by systematic variation of parameters such as pH, ionic strength, binder,
plasticizer, etc.

Proposal 9- Additive manufacturing (3D printing) of chemo- and biocatalysts with
control over spatial composition and dynamic functionalities

● WP2: Obtaining porous Si-containing thermoset hydrogels printed by SLA which can then be
loaded with Hydrogenases or other enzymes.

● The second proposal will explore different printing techniques, enzyme immobilization methods
and geometrical arrangements (including pore size and geometry) to produce and evaluate
reactor designs.
These prototypes will then be characterized by a variety of methods. The Biocatalyst mechanism
will also be investigated by computational methods.
