WORDS OR PHRASES
Writers often use a comma when they want to indicate
a very brief pause following an introductory word or
phrase. By using a comma in this way, they can
emphasize a plot event or signal a change in the plot.
They can also help create the storytelling “feel” of a
text.

The following examples from “Two Legs or One?” show
how writers use commas after introductory words and
phrases.

1. Following an introductory noun of direct address :

Wife, come, cook these as quickly as you can. . . .

2. Following an introductory prepositional phrase (especially if there is


more than one introductor y prepositional phrase):

With that, Goha fell to the fl oor and pretended to be dead.

On hearing this, Goha sat bolt upright.

3. Following an introductory inter jection, adverb, or adverbial phrase


that expresses time:

One day, a hungry man named Goha was walking. . . .
