Biotechnology

Is a broad area of biology, involving In the late 20th and early 21st centuries,
the use of living systems and biotechnology has expanded to include new
and diverse sciences, such as genomics,
organisms to develop or make
recombinant gene techniques, applied
products. Depending on the tools and immunology, and development of
applications, it often overlaps with pharmaceutical therapies and
related scientific fields. diagnostic tests. The term "Biotechnology"
was first used by "Karl Ereky" in 1919,
Biotechnology has applications in four meaning the production of products from
major industrial areas, including health raw materials with the aid of living
care (medical), crop production and organisms.

Definition
The wide concept of "biotech" or "biotechnology" encompasses a wide range of procedures for modifying living organisms according to
human purposes, going back to domestication of animals, cultivation of the plants, and "improvements" to these through breeding
programs that employ artificial selection and hybridization. Modern usage also includes genetic engineering as well as cell and tissue
culture technologies.

Biotechnology is the research and development in the laboratory using bioinformatics for exploration, extraction, exploitation and

production from any living organisms and any source of biomass by means of biochemical engineering where high value-added
products could be planned (reproduced by biosynthesis, for example), forecasted, formulated, developed, manufactured, and marketed
for the purpose of sustainable operations (for the return from bottomless initial investment on R & D) and gaining durable patents
rights (for exclusives rights for sales, and prior to this to receive national and international approval from the results on animal
experiment and human experiment, especially on the pharmaceutical branch of biotechnology to prevent any undetected side-effects
or safety concerns by using the products). The utilization of biological processes, organisms or systems to produce products that are
anticipated to improve human lives is termed biotechnology.
• What are products of biotechnology?
Specifically, industrial biotechnology
uses enzymes and micro-organisms to
make bio-based products in sectors such
as chemicals, food ingredients,
detergents, paper, textiles and biofuels.

Medicine
Medical Biotechnology Vaccines – is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a
particular infectious disease. Vaccines teach your immune system how to create antibodies that protect you
from diseases.
Antibiotics – is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria. It is the most important type of
antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections, and antibiotic medications are widely used in the
treatment and prevention of such infections.
Pest resistant crops – have been genetically modified so they are toxic to certain insects. It has been
credited with reducing the amount of chemical insecticides applied worldwide to those crops.
Plant and animal breeding – are the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to
selectively develop particular phenotypic traits. Advances in animal breeding, genetics and genomics are
facilitating a more efficient industry.
Biocatalysts – refers to the use of biological systems of their parts to speed up chemical reactions. Its
important advantages of the biocatalysts are its high specificity, selectivity, and activity. Besides, they
operate at moderate pH and temperatures, allowing greater efficiency in the process, and reduce the
environmental impact.
Fermentation – is the process of converting carbohydrates to alcohol or organic acids using
microorganisms -yeast or bacteria- under anaerobic conditions. It makes the food easier to digest and
nutrients easier to assimilate.

Microorganisms – are microscopic organisms that exist as
unicellular, multicellular, or cell clusters. Microorganisms
are widespread in nature and are beneficial to life.
Bioremediation – employs the use of living organisms, like
microbes and bacteria, in removal of contaminants,
pollutants, and toxins from soil, water, and other
environments.

Agriculture
Agriculture-science or practice of farming,
including cultivation of the soil for the growing of
crops and the rearing of animals to provide food,
wool, and other products.
Agriculture Product field crops, fruits, vegetables,
horticultural specialties, cattle, sheep, hogs, goats,
horses, poultry, furbearing animals, milk, eggs and
furs.

trace chemicals that may include flavorings.
Vinegar typically contains 5–8% acetic acid by
volume. Usually the acetic acid is produced by the
fermentation of ethanol or sugars by acetic acid
bacteria. There are many types of vinegar,

Description of Products
Bioremediation-employs the use of living organisms, like microbes and bacteria, in the removal of
contaminants, pollutants, and toxins from soil, water, and other environments. Bioremediation is used to
clean up oil spills or contaminated groundwater
Waste Water and Industrial Effluents-used for treating wastewater that is produced by industries as
an undesirable by-product. After treatment, the treated industrial wastewater (or effluent) may be reused
or released to a sanitary sewer or to a surface water in the environment.
Aerobic Biological Treatment-processes use bacteria and oxygen (from injected air) to remove
dissolved organic load (COD/BOD) from your wastewater. The process is controlled by oxygen sensors
in the activated sludge (aeration tank) and residual bacteria (waste activated sludge) can be separated
various ways.

Activated Sludge Process-type of wastewater treatment process for treating sewage or industrial
wastewaters using aeration and a biological floc composed of bacteria and protozoa.
Soil and Land Treatment-controlled application of wastewater to soil to achieve treatment of
constituents in the wastewater. ... The OF process uses the soil surface and vegetation for treatment,
with limited percolation, and the treated effluent is collected as surface runoff at the bottom of the
slope1.
