-said Rizal The characters are: Ibarra, Maria Clara, Elias, Tasio, Capitan Tiago, Padre Damasco, Padre Salve, etc… were drawn by Rizal from person who actually existed during his time Maria Clara was Leonor Rivera, although in real life she became unfaithful, unlike a heroine of the novel and married an Englishman. Ibarra and Elias represented Rizal himself, Tasio the sage was his elder brother Paciano. Padre Salve was identified by rizalist has Padre Antonio Piernaveja, the hated Augustinian Friar in Cabite who was killed by our patriot during the revolution. Capitan Tiago was Capitan Hilario Sunico san Nicolas. Dona Victoria was Dona Augustina Medel. The two brother Basilio and Crispin were the Crisostomo brother of Hagunoy. Father Damasco was typically of a domineering friar during the days of Rizal, who was arrogant supercilious, and anti- Pilipino. Rizal’s Friends praise the Noli The friends of Rizal healed the novel, praising it in a glowing colors. As to be expected. Rizal enemies condemned it. Rizal anticipated the vitriolic attracts of his enemies, who were sore to be told the truth of their evil ways.

“The government and the friars will probably attacks the work, refuting my statement, but I trust in the God of Truth and the person who have actually seen our sufferings” Copies of the Noli were sent by Rizal to blumentritt, Regidor, Hidalgo Mariano Ponce, Graciano Lopez Jeana, Aguirre and other friends.
