What is Inclusive Play?
Children benefit from being outside, interacting with
INCLUSIV
their environment, learning from nature and developing
E PLAY
through play. Inclusive play makes these opportunities
available to all children, regardless of ability and
background. Inclusive play doesn't mean that every element
of play is accessible to everyone, but it does mean that the
combination of play experiences adds to something that is
equally great for each child. Some children can't climb to the
top of a rope, some don't want to, others really need to. The
same is true with quieter, more creative activities. Diverse
and flexible opportunities are needed.
Inclusive playgrounds are much more
than choosing colorful play components and
connecting them to ramped inclines. A really
great inclusive play space provides access,
promotes inclusive play between children of
all abilities, and develops the whole
community, whole environment, and whole
child - across all developmental domains.
When we can provide children and families
with inclusive environments that promote
playing together more independently,
children feel respected, nurtured,
encouraged, and active during play.
INCLUSIVE DESIGN
Considers at every stage the needs of different
groups to avoid excluding particular people.
Is aware of the diversity of visitors and staffs, and
how different people access the world around them.
Is a people-centered approach that encourages
participation and involvement to create varied,
sensory rich opportunities for everyone to engage
with their environment.
Encourages a move towards designing play
opportunities, facilities, and services that reflect our
diverse population, creating more exciting and
engaging experiences for all.
Inclusion and involvement should be considered at every stage
of the development process, from planning through designed to
installation, evaluation and maintenance.
Current building regulation and the provisions of the disability
discrimination act (DDA) should be seen as minimum requirement
and organizations should strive to exceed them wherever
practical.
Inclusive design is challenging. It I'd impossible design everything
for everyone, and at times there might be a need exclusive designs
that cater for a specific group of people, for example Braille. The

experience and are not excluded from opportunities during their
visit.
Who are we designing for?
The beneficiaries of inclusive play
and its outcomes include,
Local communities,
Visitors to the facilities who will
directly experience the inclusive
play opportunities that are
developed,
Play professionals who will have
shining examples of good practice
and creative play provision to talk
about and learn from.
Within these groups it is important to consider
the diverse range of individuals involved.
Projects should target the whole community
including those groups who are at risk of exclusion
through age, ethnicity, social or economic
circumstance or disability. This is why an inclusive
approach to all aspects of the design is imperative.
Following an inclusive approach will create a
transferable model that demonstrates inclusive play
provision and associated facilities to create a better
quality, integrated all round experience.
What should you expect?
Responses to design briefs will need to
demonstrate that the following groups and
activities have been considered. This list is not
intended to be exhaustive: it should be seen as
starting point. The overall aim is to ensure that all
children have access to an equal quality of
experience. It is important to note that this
doesn’t mean that every bit has to be accessible
to everyone, but it does mean that it all need a to
add up to a great experience for everyone.
Children with mobility impairments
Children using wheelchairs that wish to engage
in physical activities
Children that might use a wheel chair for some
of the time but be able engage in physical
activities.
Children with reduced mobility that might use
walking aids rather than wheelchairs
Will also benefit children with health conditions

Common issues and things to consider:
Children can get there
Can a child using a manual wheelchair or powered mobility vehicle get to the play
area? Are there any potential barriers on the approach or around the play area such
as kerbs, narrow paths, steep slopes, gutters etc?
