Concreting at extreme environment:
• Environmental conditions are a considerably
influential factor to life cycle and durability
of concrete structures.
• Includes hot weather, cold weather, under-
water condition, etc.
Effects of hot weather on concrete:
• Rapid Rate of Hydration
• More Plastic Shrinkage
• Rapid Evaporation of Mixing Water
• Less Finishing Time
• Absorption of Water by Subgrade and Form Work
• Difficulty in Curing
• Difficulty in Air Entrainment
• Conveyance of Concrete
• Use of Curing Compounds
Precautions of hot weathering:
• Dampening forms, reinforcement and subbase
• Erecting wind breaks and sunshades to protect
exposed concrete surfaces
• Cooling concrete ingredients
• (During transport of wet concrete) cooling
containers, pipelines, chutes, etc.
• Immediate curing after final finishing is complete
• Moist curing to control concrete temperature
Cold weather concreting:
• According to the American Concrete Institute®
(ACI)’s publication, “Guide to Cold Weather
Concreting,” (ACI 306R) cold weather is defined as
any time the air temperature falls or is expected to
fall below 40°F during the protection period (the time
required to prevent concrete from being affected by
exposure to cold weather).
Effects of cold weather on concrete:

• Freezing of Concrete at Early Age
• Freezing and Thawing
Underwater concreting:
• Concreting that is done in the water is known as
Underwater Concreting.
