UNO and its Organs

An Introduction to UNO
United Nations Organization (UNO)is the largest organization of the
world. It was established on 24th October, 1945 A .D .after the end of
the world war-ll with the initiative of the British Prime Minister Winston
Churchill and the US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. There are
193 countries as members of UNO. These all the member countries
meet once a year at New York , the UN headquarters where the
Countries enjoy the freedom to address the meeting and express their
opinion respecting the charter.
UN LOGO AND ITS
MEANING
The olive branches are a symbol for peace, and the world map
represents all the people and the countries of the world. White and
Blue are the official colors of the United Nations.
Main Objectives of UNO
• According to the United Nations Charter, the UN objectives are:
• To maintain international peace and security.
• To develop friendly relations among nations on the basis of equality and the
principle of self-determination.
• To foster worldwide cooperation in solving economic, social, cultural and
humanitarian problems.
• To promote human rights and fundamental freedom for the people of the world.
• To serve as a center where various nations can coordinate their activities towards
the attainment of the objectives of the United Nations.
• To save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.
ORGANS OF UNO
GENERAL ASSEMBLY
SECURITY COUNCIL AND IT’S
FUNCTIONS
Security council comprises 15 members out of which 5 hold permanent
membership whereas 10 members are elected temporarily for 2 years
by general Assembly. Those permanent members enjoy an extra ordinary power
called VETO which can reject the decision even passed by the general assembly.
FUNCTIONS:
1.To maintain international peace and security in accordance with the
Principles and purposes of the United Nations.
2.To recommend the admission of New Members.
3.To investigate any dispute or situation which might lead to international friction.
4.To mobilize the peace keeping forces into the conflict stricken areas.
SECRETARIAT
The secretariat is the head office of U. N. It is headed by General
Secretary who is elected for 5 years by general Assembly.

• General assembly may be understood as the parliamentary organ
which comprises of all the member countries of UN as members.
• VETO is an extra ordinary power which can reject the decision even
passed by the General Assembly. China, France, Russia, The U.K and
The U.S.A are the permanent members of the security council has the
power to use VETO in the United Nations.
• The Secretariat is the head office of UN. The Secretariat runs day to
day administration and oversees the UN programs.
• International court of justice hears the international cases brought by
the countries related to war crimes, illegal state interference etc.
• .Trusteeship Council comprises the 5 permanent members of Security
Council as members. It was created to look after the well being of the
colonized countries when they were kept under the UN trusteeship
system while in the process of independence.
• All the specialized agencies of UN are affiliated to Economic and Social
council of UN and it works in the area of social, economic, cultural
and humanitarian activities.
