LANGUAGE
THE MOST
COMMON SEXIST
PRACTICES WHEN
SPEAKING
IN PUBLIC
DESCRIBING
WOMEN’S
APPEARANCE IN
TERMS OF THEIR
SEXUALITY OR
FEMININITY
Example: Fellow Toastmasters,
the next speaker is a beautiful
and sexy member of our club.
Exception: German
PRINCIPLE
USING PRONOUNS
INCORRECTLY
OLD GRAMMAR RULE:
When the gender is not specified,
use the masculine form
of the pronoun.
Ex. Every tourist must show his passport.
NEW GENDER FAIR WAYS
1. Change the noun to plural
Ex. Tourists must show their passports.
A MAN IS MARRIED TO A
WOMAN AND VICE VERSA. The
opposite of wife is husband. One does
not own or supersede the other.
Thus it is inaccurate to
use “man and wife”.
WORDS NEED TO BE CHOSEN
CAREFULLY TO ELIMINATE
INAPPROPRIATE GENDER
IMPLICATIONS.
WE SHOULD LEARN NOT TO
PROVOKE HALF OF OUR
LISTENERS ( ONE HALF OF THE
POPULATION CONSISTS OF
WOMEN).
