There are three factors that cause the decrease in terminal voltage:
 armature circuit resistance
 armature reaction
 reduction in field current

There are two possible connections of a compound generator:

 Short shunt
 Long shunt

Characteristics
A compound generator whose series field winding produces flux to aid the flux of the shunt
field is known as a cumulative compound generator.

A compound generator whose series field winding produces flux to oppose the flux of the
shunt field is known as a differential compound generator.

The differential compound generator is used as a special purpose machine only, and not as a
generator for distribution of power. It is a constant current generator for such applications as
welding and electroplating.

Overcompound: A compound generator having rising characteristics is known as an
overcompound generator.
Flat compound: A compound generator having a no-load terminal voltage equal to the
terminal voltage at full load is called a flat compound generator.
Undercompound: A compound generator having a full load terminal voltage lower
than that of a flat compound generator but higher than that of a shunt generator is
called an undercompound compound generator.

load requires 200 A. The load is located 3000 ft from the generator and is connected by means of
The resistance of the cable at the operating temperature is 0.025 Ω per 1000 ft. (a) Determine
the generator terminal voltage required to obtain 220 volts at the load when the current is 200 A. (b) Repeat (a)
when the current is zero. (c) Determine the generator regulation.

Solutions:
(a) Total line resistance, R = 0.025 × 3 × 2 = 0.150 Ω
Line IR drop = 200 × 0.150 = 30 V
Generator terminal voltage, Vt = 220 + 30 = 250 V
(b) When current is zero,
Line IR drop = 0 × 0.150 = 0 V
Generator terminal voltage, Vt = 220 + 0 = 220 V
(c) Percentage voltage regulation

GeneratorCharacteristics
Characteristics
A series generator, as its name implies, has a series field but no shunt field.

A series generator is employed as a constant-current source by making the use of the

drooping portion of the curve and as a series booster by using the rising portion.
