Vocabulary Words
Ground: surface of the Earth

village: a group of houses in a rural area

Agriculture
The science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of
crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products.

They cleared the land to use it for Agriculture.


Animals
A living thing that is not a human being or plant

The Farm had many different animals.


Farm
A piece of land used for growing crops and/or raising animals.

The man went to work on Maggie’s Farm.


Cattle
Cows , Bulls, or Steers that are kept on a farm or ranch for meat or milk.

Sandy went to town to sell this season’s cattle.

Dairy
A type of farm that produces milk. A type of food mad from milk.

Ben had a dairy farm with over 100 cows.


Harvest
The time (season) that crops are gathered from the fields or the activity of gathering
crops.

In America, harvest season is typically in the fall.


Horse(s)
A large animal that is used for riding and for carrying and pulling things.

Long ago, horses were used to pull plows.


Plow
Turning over soil to prepare for planting. The piece of equipment used to do so. (Both
a verb and noun)

Before the corn seed is planted, Tommy must first plow the field.
Seed(s)
A small object produced by a plant from which a new plant can grow.

In order to grow corn, Dianne must first plant the corn seed.
Weather
The state of the air and atmosphere at a particular time and place : the temperature
and other outside conditions (such as rain, cloudiness, etc.) at a particular time and
place

Weather can often be the determining factor for how good a crop will be.
Crop
A plant or product that is grown by farmers.

It is time to harvest the corn crop.


Equipment
Supplies or tools needed for a special purpose.

The Millers bought all new farm equipment this season.


Horticulture
The growing of fruits vegetables, and flowers.

Horticulture can be a profitable way to farm.


Paddy
Word for wet rice. Field in which rice is grown.

It is hard work to work in a rice paddy.


Pasture
Grass or other plants grown for feeding grazing animals, as well as land used for
grazing.

Tommy has over 200 acres of pasture land.


Egg(s)
 A hard-shelled oval thing from which a young bird is born.

Eggs from the farm are always the freshest.


Chicken(s)
A bird that is raised by people for its eggs and meat.

Billy went to the chicken house to collect the eggs.


Turkey(s)
A large American bird that is related to the chicken and that is hunted or raised by
people for its meat.

Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the American symbol.


Poultry
Birds (such as chickens and ducks) that are raised on farms for their eggs or meat.

Chickens and turkeys are different types of poultry.


Soil
The upper layer of earth that may be dug or plowed and in which plants grow

Once the soil is plowed, the seeds can be planted.


Tractor
A 4-wheeled or track-laying automotive vehicle used especially for drawing farm
equipment

Before the seeds for the crop is planted, the tractor must plow the soil.
Grain
The seeds of plants (such as wheat, corn, and rice) that are used for food.

Grain foods are an important part of what people eat.


Combine (Harvester)
A machine that harvests grain crops.

Ned uses the combine to harvest this year’s corn crop.


Season
A time characterized by a particular circumstance or feature

Autumn is the typical season to harvest grain crops in America.


Tornado
A violent destructive whirling wind accompanied by a funnel-shaped cloud.

You can see a tornado from a long distance on a Kansas farm.
