BREAST CARE

DEFINATION
 Breast care is the process of cleaning the
breast of mother that helps in maintaining
hygiene and prevent from cross infection
during feeding.
PURPOSES
 To clean the breast.
 To detect any abnormalities.
 To stimulate milk ejection
 To prevent local infection
 To prevent breast complication.
INDICATION
POSTNATAL MOTHER
Cracked nipple
Patient who are not able to take self care
NIPPLE WITH UNHYGIENIC CONDITIONS.
Before and after breast feeding
ARTICLES REQUIRED
 A tray containing
 Bowel of cotton swabs.
 Sponge cloths
 Towel
 Soap
 Kidney tray
 Small mackintosh
 Ointment if prescribed
 One basin with Luke warm water
 Jug
 screen
PROCEDURE
 Prepare all the articles
 Explain the mother about the procedure and its importance
 Place the women in comfortable position and facing
towards you to facilitate comfort and care while carrying
out procedure
 Privacy maintain and expose the breast
 Examine both breast by inspection and palpation
 Place the mackintosh and towel under the breasts
 Pour the water in the breasts first clean the far side breast
from midwife
 Wash the breast with sponge by using lukewarm water
 Clean the nipples with clean cotton or cloth and warm
water only
 Check for cracked nipple ore engorgement of the
breast
 Dry the breast with towel and put the baby on the
breast
 Clean the breast with wet cloths after breastfeeding
and leave small amount of milk on nipple and dry on
air to prevent cracked nipple
 Advise her to wear supportive brassier
 Make the mother and child comfortable
 Replace article
 Record and reporting if there are any abnormalities

 Maintain breast hygiene
 Assess breast condition regularly
 Perform self breast examination each month
 Breast feed the child
 Maintain proper position during breast feeding
 Identify abnormalities and treat accordingly
 Diet
 Infection prevention
 Others
 Avoid tight bra
 Pain relief (cold compression or medications )
