1. What are the Rías Altas?

The Rías Altas are a part of the coastal area of Galicia, in the north of Spain. The north
and northwest part of the province of A Coruña and the entire coast of the province of
Lugo form the border with Asturias in the east and with Cabo Finisterre in the south.
The Rías Altas are divided between the provinces of A Coruña and Lugo, extended
along a coastline of outstanding landscape diversity: it is abrupt in Cape Ortegal, it
has cliffs in A Capelada and amazing beaches.
In this area the visitor can also see fishing villages where anyone can enjoy the
Galician gastronomy tasting seafood tapas, octopus á feira and cuttlefish in its
ink.
The route through the North of the Rias Altas begins in Ferrol, following the road that
winds along the coast. It immediately reaches the Cabo Prior, protector of the
beaches of Santa Comba , Doniños, and Valdoviño, where nature shows its generosity
in A Frouxeira arenal -a paradise for surfers because of its three kilometers long-.
The next step is Villa de Cedeira where, after making a pause in one of the taverns of
the port, it rises along a track to see a Capelada, a mountain range. The best viewpoint
of this place is the Vixia da Herbeira, a natural balcony at 613 meters of altitude.

3. The most beautiful villages

The Galician coast of the provinces of Lugo and A Coruña, between the Costa
Ártabra and the Rías Altas, offers some of the most spectacular landscapes of
the Iberian Peninsula. And of course, it hides some seaside towns as
picturesque as welcoming. This is our selection of the five most beautiful:
Ribadeo, Viveiro, Ortigueira, Cedeira and San Andrés de Teixido.
Ribadeo

The first port of the Mariña Lucense, full of stone houses, old churches and
restaurants where the Galician gastronomy goes hand in hand with the
Asturian, due to its geographical proximity. And in addition, a bunch of
spectacular beaches nearby, such as the Praia das Catedrais.
Viveiro
At the bottom of the largest estuary of the Bay of Biscay, this town still
preserves the old medieval walls and a rich Romanesque architectural
heritage. In addition, it is flanked by beautiful and quiet beaches.
Ortigueira

Famous for the International Festival of the Celtic World, this

small town is a must stop on any route along the Galician coast. Its
old town, called O Ponto, is full of cobblestone alleyways and
traditional houses.
Cedeira
Already in the province of A Coruña, about 35 km. from El Ferrol,
we find Cedeira, with its long boardwalk that leads to the area of the
fish market and the docks, and its delicious barnacles. The best
(they say) of all Galicia.
San Andrés de Teixido
The best kept secret in this region. One of those magical towns, perched
on a cliff, where the landscape is overwhelming and fascinating at the
same time. It is said that here anyone who doesn´t go alive, will go
dead. Our opinion is that it is better to visit it in life.
4. PRAIA DAS CATEDRAIS
This natural wonder located on the coast of Lugo surprises visitors
with its arches, domes and needles of stone that the sea, the wind
and the passage of time have been sculpting. It is known as "the
Cathedral of the Sea", and the experience of walking through its
white sand corridors is a must if you travel to Galicia.
5. A COSTA DA MORTE
The coast of death (Costa da Morte in Galician) is a coastal region located in the
province of A Coruña that covers from Cabo Roncudo to Cabo Finisterre.
On the one hand, this area of the Rías Altas, has this name because of the
amount of shipwrecks that have been there. In fact,in these waters throughout
history, hundreds of people have died and more than 60 ships sank in the last
century.
On the other hand,The Prestige disaster was one of the most recent accidents on
this coast, which brought great environmental catastrophes in this area.
