Sustainable Construction

• Sustainable construction is about implementing the principles of sustainable

development in the selection of raw materials, planning, design and execution
of a project, until it’s entire life cycle and management of the residual waste.

• the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines sustainable construction as

"the practice of creating structures and using processes that are
environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout a building's life-
cycle from siting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation
and deconstruction."

• Construction industry has deep impact on environment.

Sustainability
• Construction Materials
• Cement
• Bricks
• Coarse Aggregate
• Sand
• Construction Practices
• Lean Construction
• Designing and Planning
• Use of natural resources- sunlight and wind
• Optimum Design
Construction Materials
• Cement- Cement production is the third ranking producer of
anthropogenic (man-made) CO2 in the world after transport and
energy generation.
• 1kg of cement= 0.78 kg of Co2
• 30% co2= Energy required by burning coals
• 70%= Process of forming cement

• Substitute- Fly Ash (thermal Plants Byproduct) & Ground Granulated

Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS)- byproduct of iron and steel industry
Sand
• Can be replaced by fly ash, quarry dust, copper slag

Coarse Aggregate
Recycled concrete waste
Construction Practices
• Reduce Construction Waste and Managing the waste

• BIM, monitoring and planning

Designing and Planning

• Optimum structural design- Save material, energy, cost

• Use of research and engineering

• Architectural POV-
• Site selection, Use of natural light, ventilation, coherenting nature
with the project, focusing on landscape around the structure.
• Use of solar panels, rain water harvesting system.
Strategic Policy and Guide
• Creation of a national strategy to improve the development : The
Government in Singapore has announced their Sustainable Singapore
Blueprint in April 2009 to make a long term strategy of sustainable
construction development.Another example is Strategy for sustainable
construction in the UK.

• Investing money on research and education : S$50 million “Research

Fund for the Built Environment” was launched in 2007 by Singapore
Government to kick-start R&D efforts in sustainable development.[19]
Smart Designing & Planning
• Motive- Reduce material Wastage
• BIM- Helps in collaboration work btw diff departments and used to
reduce wastage and over ordering.
• Adopting Insulation- Energy losses.
• Using more openings for natural sunlight and in region with hot
climate like Delhi, use of double gazed window is preferable.
