Spin Rate

Week 3
Spin Rate

 MLB defines spin rate as

 A pitcher's Spin Rate represents the rate of spin on a baseball after it is
released. It is measured in revolutions per minute.
 The amount of spin on a pitch changes its trajectory. The same pitch thrown
at the same Velocity will end up in a different place depending on how much
it spins. (For instance, a fastball with a high Spin Rate appears to have a
rising effect on the hitter, and it crosses the plate a few inches higher than a
fastball of equal Velocity with a lower Spin Rate. Conversely, a lower Spin
Rate on a changeup tends to create more movement.)
Spin Rate vs Velocity

 On fastballs, we learned that high spin tends to lead to swinging strikes and
fly balls, while low spin gets grounders.

 Chapman vs Burlie
 4 seam vs 2 seam
Spin Rate

 High Spin Rate = High swing

and miss rate
 Low Spin Rate = Low swing and
miss rate
Breaking Balls Spin Rate

 Curveball/Slider
 1000-1500 low spin rate – ground ball rate low
 2400-3000 very high rate – swing and miss rate high and high ground ball rate
 Changeup
 1100-1400 –high swing and miss rate and high ground ball rate
 1400-1400+ - high fly ball percentage and low swing and miss
