INDUCED VERTICAL

BREAK
WEEK 6
WHAT IS INDUCED VERTICAL BREAK?

• Induced Vertical Break = Distance between where the pitch actually crosses the front of
home plate height-wise, and where it would have crossed home plate height-wise if had it
traveled in a perfectly straight line from release, but affected by gravity.
VERTICAL BREAK

• 4 Seam you want to have a higher

number/swing and miss
• 2 Seam you want to have a lower
number-for movement/weak contact
• Elite numbers on FB 12-16
• Elite numbers on BB <2
COMPARISONS

SPIN EFFICIENCY

• Spin efficiency. Spin efficiency is how true the ball spins out of the axis it is thrown
from. It affects how much the ball moves.
• Two-seam fastballs/sinkers (MLB average spin rate ≈2150 rpms) should have spin
efficiencies between 75-100%; this range is wide primarily due to the fact that
different efficiencies work best with different spin directions, arm slots, and grip/feel.
TRUE SPIN

• True (Useful) Spin – True Spin (or Useful Spin) only reflects the components

of spin that contribute to movement. For example, a fastball may have a total Spin Rate
of 2,200 rpm. ... It represents the % of total spin that is contributing to a ball's movement.
