INTRODUCTION:
Banking and the regulation of banks have both been key
elements in the development of the United States and its
financial system. Banks have attained a unique and central
role in U.S. financial markets through their deposit-taking,
lending, and other activities. Banks hold the vast majority
of deposits that are transferable by check. These demand
deposit powers have allowed bankers to become the
principal agents or middlemen in many financial
transactions and in the nation’s payments system.
