SOLVED QUESTIONS
1. Which number would replace question mark
in the series
7, 12, 19, ?, 39.
a)29
b)28
c)26
d)24
SOLUTION
Clearly, the given sequence follows the pattern :
+ 5, +7, +9 ... i.e.,
7 + 5 = 12,
12 + 7=19
Missing number = 19 + 9 = 28.
Hence, the answer is (b).
2. Which is the number that comes next in the sequence :

0 6 24 60 120 210 ?

a) 240
b) 290
c) 336
d) 504
SOLUTION
Clearly, the given series is
l3 - 1, 23 - 2, 3^3 - 3,….., 43 – 4, 53 - 5

Next number = 73 - 7 = 343 - 7 = 336.

Hence, the answer is (c).
3. Which is the number that comes next in the following
sequence ?

4, 6, 12, 14, 28, 30, (?)

a) 32
b) 60
c) 62
d) 64
SOLUTION
The given sequence is a combination of two series :
I. 4. 12, 28, ( ) and
II. 6. 14, 30.
Now, the pattern followed in each of the above two series is :
+ 8, + 16. + 32
So. missing number = (28 + 32) = 60.
Hence, the answer is (b).
4. Look at this series:

14, 28, 20, 40, 32, 64, ...

What number should come next?

A. 52
B. 56
C. 96
D. 128
SOLUTION

Answer: Option B
Explanation:
This is an alternating multiplication and subtracting series: First, multiply by
2 and then subtract 8.
5. Newspaper : Press : : Cloth : ?

a) Tailor
(b) Textile
(c) Fibre
(d) Factory
(e) Mill
SOLUTION
Answer: Option E
Explanation:
Newspaper is printed in Press and Cloth is manufactured in Mill.
6. Cup is to coffee as bowl is to

A. Dish
B. Soup
C. Spoon
D. food
SOLUTION
Answer: Option B
Explanation:
Coffee goes into a cup and soup goes into a bowl. Choices a and c are
incorrect because they are other utensils. The answer is not choice d because
the word food is too general.
7. Which word does NOT belong with the
others?

A. tire
B. steering wheel
C. engine
D. car
SOLUTION

Answer: Option D
Explanation:
Tire, steering wheel, and engine are all parts of a car.
ARITHMETIC
AND
GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION
ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION

An arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers in which

each term is derived from the preceding term by adding or
subtracting a fixed number called the common difference
"d".

The general form of an Arithmetic Progression is a, a + d, a

+ 2d, a + 3d and so on.

The nth term of an AP series is Tn = a + (n - 1) d,

where Tn = nth term and a = first term. Here d = common

difference = Tn - Tn-1.
Sum of first n terms of an AP:

Tn = Sn - Sn-1 , where Tn = nth term

AM (Arithmetic mean)
When three quantities are in AP, the middle one is called as the
arithmetic mean of the other two. If a, b and c are three terms
in AP then
b = (a+c)/2

For example, 3,7,11,15,19 is an Arithmetic Progression in

which
constant difference= 7-3 = 11-7 = 15-11 = 4, and first term = 3
GEOMETRIC PROGRESSION
A geometric progression is a sequence in which each term is
derived by multiplying or dividing the preceding term by a
fixed number called the common ratio.

The nth term of a GP series is

 Sum of first n terms of a GP:

 The sum of infinite terms of a GP series

GM (Geometric Mean)
When three quantities are in GP, the middle one is called as
the geometric mean of the other two.

If a, b are three quantities in GP and geometric mean of a

and b i.e.
=√ab
1. Find 16th term in the series 7, 13, 19,
25, ...
SOLUTION

a=7
d = 13 – 7 = 6

16th term, t16 = a + (n-1)d

= 7 + (16 – 1)6 = 7 + 90 = 97
2. Find the sum of the series
32, 16, 8, 4, … upto infinity.
SOLUTION

First term, a = 32
Common ratio, r = 16 / 32 = 8 / 16 = 4 / 8 = 1 /
2 = 0.5

We know that for an infinite GP, Sum of terms =

a / (1 – r)

Sum of terms of the GP = 32 / (1 – 0.5)

= 32 / 0.5 = 64
3. The first term of an AP is 3 and the last
term is 17. If the sum of all terms is 150,
what is the 5th term?

A.5
B.7
C.9
D.11
SOLUTION

The sum of all terms is (n/2)(a + l) = 150.

This gives us n = 15.
The 15th term is (a + 14d) = 17.
Substituting for a, we get d = 1.
Therefore, the 5th term is (a + 4d) = 7.
