THE CONCEPT OF LIFE SKILLS

What is a skill?
A skill is the ability that a person has to
do something well. Or
A skill is the ability of an individual to
apply his/her mental and physical power
to control the environment.
What are Life Skills?

Life Skills are abilities that a person has


to live well in the society.
Life skills enable a person to manage his
or her life properly and make it better.
Life skills include the ability to;-

– Understand oneself
– Build sound relationship with others
– Survive under difficult circumstances
– Act responsible and safe
– Solve problems
TYPES OF LIFE SKILLS

There are three major types of life


skills;-
i. Individual life skills
ii. Social life skills
iii. Effective decision making life skills

These are skills that enable an individual


to understand him/herself well in various
ways.

SKILLS
Aspects of individual life skills include;-
i. Self awareness
ii. Copying with stress
iii. Copying with emotion
iv. Assertiveness
A. SELF AWARENESS

Awareness is the ability of a person to


know or understand something.
Self awareness is the ability of an
individual to understand him/herself
better.
Self awareness include;-

- Understanding your emotions and


feelings.
- Understanding your strengths and
weaknesses
- Knowing who are you, where you are,
why and where are you going.
B. COPYING WITH STRESS

Stress is a mental, emotional or physical


tension or pressure. Stress can be caused by
events like examination, death, divorce, or
any serious problem.
Copying with stress is the ability of a person
to control his or her emotional tension when
the problem occurs.
C. COPYING WITH EMOTIONS

Emotion refers to the strong feelings of


fear, love, anger, shyness, disgust and the
desire to be accepted.
Copying with emotion is the ability of a
person to control and manage his or her
strong feelings and actions.
D. ASSERTIVENESS

Assertiveness is the ability of an


individual to know what he or she wants
and why and be able to take necessary
steps to achieve it in the right way.
Note:

Assertiveness leads a person to self-


esteem. What is self-esteem?
Self-esteem is the act of having belief
and confidence in your own ability and
value.
2. SOCIAL LIFE SKILLS

Social Life Skills refer the skills that


enable a person to understand and live in
peace and harmony with others.

A. FORMING HEALTHY
RELATIONSHIP
Relationship refers to the way people
interact and behave toward each other.
Relationship can be between children,
neighbors, peers, students, teachers and
parents.

Being able to form healthy or positive
relationships enables one to know how to
behave properly in each relationship.
B. FORMING FRIENDSHIP

Forming friendship is the ability of an


individual to make friends with people
who he or she can share activities, ideas,
joy and sadness.
This life skill enables an individual to
prevent loneliness.
C. PEER RESISTANCE
Peer Pressure is a social influence or pressure
on somebody to adopt a type of behavior,
dress or attitude in order to be accepted as
part of a group. Or
Peer Pressure is the strong influence of a
group especially of children on member of
that group to behave as -

Peer pressure can be positive or negative.
What is peer resistance?
Peer resistance is the act of an individual
to take control of his or -

D. EMPATHY

Empathy is the ability to understand


other people’s feelings and to feel
concerned about their problems.
Empathy enable us to share problems
with our friends, neighbors, school
mates, workmates, teachers and so on.
E. NEGOTIATION

Negotiation is the ability to agree on


issues without undermining or going
against one’s principles.
Negotiation helps us to solve conflicts in
our society.
F. EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION

Communication is the act of transmitting


and receiving information
Effective communication is the ability of
a person to communicate with people
according to their mood, age and
background.

We can use social life skills in;-
i. Forming good relationship with
other people
ii. Making good friends
iii. Showing empathy

skills that enable a person to make good

iv. Problem solving.
A. CRITICAL THINKING

Critical Thinking is the ability of a


person to develop a deep understanding
of something.
Critical thinking helps us to come up
with good ideas or ways of solving
problems.
B. CREATIVE THINKING

This is the ability of thinking and come


up with a new ideas and new ways of
doing things.
Creative thinking helps people to come
up with solutions that other people never
thought of.
C. DECISION MAKING

Decision making is the ability of making


the best choice out of many available
options.
In life it is important to think about the
consequences before making a decision
D. PROBLEM SOLVING

This is the ability of making a choice and


act on it.
Problem solving helps a person to make
decisions and implement them.

People learn life skills from different


sources including the following;-
i. Family
ii. Neighbours
iii. Friends

v. Society
vi. Religion
vii. Mass media. E.g. radio, television,
newspapers, films and movies.
CONSEQUENCES OF NOT
APPLYING LIFE SKILLS
Failure to apply life skills can lead to
problems. Some those problems are;-
i. Improper choice in our decisions
ii. It may lead to bad behavior
iii. It may lead to conflicts
CONSEQUENCES OF NOT
APPLYING LIFE SKILLS
iv. It may lead to poverty
v. Lack of empathy
vi. Poor leadership

Life skills are important for making life


better as follows.
i. It helps to make proper decisions in
our life. E.g. choosing a good
friends, subjects or combinations,
career, husband and wife and so on.
