Presentation On Salinity Ingress Prevention

Works Carried Out On Coastal Area of
Saurashtra Region”
Dated : …… September 2019 1
MAP OF GUJARAT COASTAL REGION

GEOGRAPHICAL STATUS
• The State of Gujarat has longest Sea Coast line of 1600 km.
• Which is about one - third of 4800 km of the total Coast line of India.
• Saurashtra and Kachchh has 1125 km Coast line.
• Saurashtra alone has 765 km Coast line.
• The region is like inverted Saucer.
• Flanked by Sea by three sides namely Arabian Sea, Gulf of Kachchh and Gulf of
Khambhat
2
• Saurashtra has 8 Districts and 22 Talukas affected by Salinity.

APPOINTMENT OF HIGH LEVEL COMMITTEES
• Looking to the magnitude and gravity of Salinity problem, the Government of Gujarat
appointed two High Level Committees to study the Salinity Ingress Problem and suggest
solution

TIDAL REGULATOR / BANDHARA
• Tidal Regulator is a solid wall with regulating gates the top of which is
kept above highest tide level.
• Where the height of tide water is limited, The construction of solid wall
with crest level above high tide level is termed as Bandhara.

SPREADING CHANNELS
• Spreading channels is one of the acceptable devices, when recharge is desired along a
narrow but continuously long area. The sweet water impounded through induced recharge
acts as a barrier.
• It will help to control movement of saline water from sea side, in addition to providing
additional ground water.
• The Spreading channel will also feed surplus floodwater from one reservoir basin to
another where rainfall is scanty.
• The recharge is attempted near the junction of Miliolite limestone and Gaj limestone, the
induced recharge will result in ground water movement towards the sea. Miliolite
limestone and Gaj limestone occur in belt parallel to the sea coast.

GROUND WATER MONITORING:

• All coastal reaches are monitored for ground water quality changes
through active observation wells located along the profile lines.

• The periodical measurements of the water level fluctuations in the

pre and post-monsoon periods are made
Reach Observation Wells in Nos
HLC – I 294
HLC – II 716

• The water samples collected are analyzed for determining their

chemical composition, to prepare water quality maps for the area.

• Geophysical monitoring of the area made by taking Vertical

Electrical Sounding (VES) at points fixed near the observation wells
on the profiles, this helps in monitoring the sub-surface movement
of seawater-freshwater interface.

RECHRAGE FROM RAINFALL, SCHEME & DRAFT (Mcum) IN HLC – I AREA
[MAY - 2017]

26
Improvement in water quality due to
construction of Spreading Channel:
Village-Tukda Miyani ,Taluka -Porbandar
•Rise in water level from 13.70 m Bgl to 9.30 m
from the year 2005 to 2009.
•Decrease in the TDS from 5250 ppm in the year
2005 to 2500 ppm in 2009.

The improvement in water

level and quality is due to
construction of spreading
channel just 60 m from the
well.

1988 AND 2017

28
Benefits accrued
Due to completion of Salinity prevention works, following benefits are accrued.

•326.33 M. cum of sweet water stored which ultimately resulted in direct and
indirect benefits to 87997 Ha. Of land.

•Further deterioration of land is prevented & in addition to this 22804 Ha &

21454 Ha. of land is reclaimed in H.L.C. I & H.L.C. II reach respectively

•Quality of ground water is improved and rise in water table is visualized.

•Shifting of 2000 TDS line toward sea is seen.

•Positive impact on yield of Agricultural produce which resulted in sharp rise of

land value.

•Improvement in socio economic condition resulted in prosperity of area.

Bottlenecks in executing remaining schemes

 As the Schemes under Salinity Control technique are located on sea

mouth, facing problems of poor foundation strata with low bearing
capacity
 Some of the schemes is Forest land is coming under submergence
of different schemes. The procedure of acquisition of the same is
very slow & costly, which is one of the major hindrance.
 Private land acquisition under revised L.A.Q. law one of the
problem.
 Interstate departmental co-operation like, Revenue, Forest etc. is
quite necessary to gear up the progress.

The problems stated above are some of the major hindrance in

completing schemes.
