Presenting a Position Paper

MUN TRAINING
The Speech
• At a normal conference, when you are recognized
(the chair says “X you have the floor”, X being the
country you represent) your job is to stand up, go to
the spot marked for speakers and present your
Position Paper.
• Before starting you address the house (you address
the people in the room according to their rank, for
exemple “Honourable chairs, fellow delegates, lovely
members of the staff, dear guests” – at trainings there
will be only chairs and delegates).
The Speech
• After addressing the house you can start
presenting your PP (either read it out loud or
present freely with only the main ideas noted
somewhere).

• Either way, preparing a good written Position

Paper will help you with anxiousness or other
things you might experience.
The Aftermath
• After having presented your Position Paper, one
of the chairs will ask whether you are open to
Points of Information (questions from other
delegates) or not. If you are well prepared you
must be confident and answer questions the best
way you can.
• If your answer is yes, the chairs are going to ask
“Are there any such (POIs) in the House? If so,
raise your placards high now” and pick a number
of delegates to ask questions.
Points and Motions
• Point of Information

• Request for a follow-up - If you ask a

question and you think the delegate did not
answer properly or have a second question
related to the first, you can ask the chairs for a
follow-up. Its approval is at the discretion of the
chairs.
Points and Motions
• Motion for a Q&A session – If there are many
delegates wishing to ask questions, one of the delegates
might raise this motion. It has to be seconded (at least 1
other delegate must say “Second”) and not objected.
The chairs may or may not approve the motion and they
will set the number of questions a delegate can ask.

• Point of Entertainment – If a delegate does not

respect the rules of the conference, he/she might get a
POE, which acts like a fun punishment decided by the
chairs together with the rest of the delegates.
