Descriptive Statistics Mean

The branch of statistics where the goal is to describe.
Numerical measures are used to tell about features of A mean is the mathematical
a set of data.   average of a group of two or more
  numerals
the mean, median, mode, or midrange
standard deviation
Overall descriptions of data
Variance
Measurements such as skewness and kurtosis The variance measures the distance each
The exploration of relationships and correlation number in the set is from the mean
between paired data
The presentation of statistical results in graphical
form
Hypothesis Testing
• The main purpose of statistics is to test a hypothesis.
• tests an assumption regarding a population parameter
• A hypothesis is an educated guess about something in the world around you.
• It is a way for you to test the results of a survey or experiment to see if you have
meaningful results.

Null Hypothesis: A claim about population parameter that is assumed to be true

until it is declared false.

Alternative hypothesis: A claim about a population parameter that will be

declared true if the null hypothesis is declared to be false
F Distribution
• It is used to test whether two samples are from populations having equal
variances
• Also used when we want to compare several population means simultaneously
• Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test is performed using F Distribution
• It’s a continuous distribution for nonnegative values

• F distribution has two degrees of freedom ---- df for numerator & df for
denominator
Df = (8,14)
df for
denominator
df for numerator
ANOVA Test

• A procedure that is used to test the null Assumptions

hypothesis that the means of
populations are equal in a single test
I. The populations follow the normal
• Comparison sample means through distribution
their variances II. The Populations are independent
• Helps to reject the null hypothesis or III. The populations have equal S.D
accept the alternate hypothesis.
Why ANOVA Test ?

Can compare two population means at a time

Can avoid the TYPE- I error that occurs in T-distribution
