What is Packaging?
Packaging shall mean all products, made of any material whatsoever,
to be used for the containment, protection, transfer, issuance and
presentation of goods, from raw materials to finished goods, and from
the producer to the user or consumer.

Package Development

In recent times, package design and

development has become an integral part of the
entire new product development mechanism.
The packaging development process takes off
with the identification of all the requirements for
the product to be developed.

Packaging Considerations

Package design and development are

often thought of as an integral part of the new
product development process. Alternatively,
development of a package (or component) can
be a separate process but must be linked
closely with the product to be packaged.

Package design starts with the

identification of all the requirements: structural
design, marketing, shelf life, quality assurance,
logistics, legal, regulatory, graphic design, end-
use, and environmental.
Packaging Considerations

With some types of products, the design

process involves detailed regulatory
requirements for the package. With packaging
foods, for example, any package components
that may contact the food are considered food
contact materials.
Toxicologists and food scientists need to
verify that the packaging materials are
permissible under applicable regulations.
Packaging engineers need to verify that the
completed package will keep the product safe
for its intended shelf life with normal usage.
Packaging processes, labeling,
distribution, and sale need to be validated to
comply with regulations and to ensure they have
the well-being of the consumer in mind.
Environmental Considerations

Package development involves considerations

for sustainability, environmental responsibility,
and applicable environmental and recycling
regulations.

It is necessary to know the relevant regulatory

requirements for point of manufacture, sale, and
use. The traditional “three R’s” of reduce, reuse,
and recycle are part of a waste hierarchy which
may be considered in product and package
development.
Three R’s
Reduce

01 begins with an examination of what

you are using, and what it is used for

Reuse

02 repurpose them for use different from

what they are intended for

Recycle

that can be shaped into a new item

components.
Packaging Machinery

Packaging machines are used for the assembly

of unit loads from sheet goods, from bulk goods
in sacks, and from individual items in the
metallurgical, printing, and wood-products
industries. Such machines may be designed to
assemble unit loads horizontally, vertically, or in
a manner that combines horizontal and vertical
operations.
Packaging Machinery

Packaging machines are used to package

products or components. This product area
includes equipment that forms, fills, seals,
wraps, cleans, and packages at different levels
of automation.
Packaging machines also include related
machinery for sorting, counting, and
accumulating. There are many different package
types.
Examples include aerosol containers,
bags and pouches, blister packs, bottles and
jars, cartons and boxes, cans, capsules,
cartridges, cases, cups and trays, drums, kegs
and pails, pallets and intermediate bulk
containers (IBC), tubes, and vials.
Closing methods for packaging
machinery can use caps and lids, cork, glue, heat
seals, nails or staples, tamper-evident or tamper-
resistant tape, tuck and fold techniques, and
wrapping paper.

Packaging Machinery

The term packaging machine is a wide-

ranging mix of machines covering many
industries. There are thousands of packaging
machines from large to small. Packaging
machines can fill liquids, wrap products, weigh
products, and protect products from
transportation and storage.
Machines can vary in size dramatically
but still perform the same basic functions. All
the machines are related to the process of
packaging products for transport, storage, and
sale. There are many more custom and standard
packaging machines used throughout the world.
