HISTORY OF JAPANESE

VIDEO GAMES
BY ZEPPLIN
I chose this topic because I am very interest in the development process of video games and
I know that there are some very famous Japanese game developers and video games.
1970S-1980
One of the first video games in japan was in 1966
with periscope. It was produced by a company that
many people know, Sega. It became very successful
in japan. Not only was it one of the first electronic
arcade machines but it was also the first arcade
machine to cost a quarter.
Japans first commercial video game
console was the Magnavox odyssey.
Around the time it came out, which is
1972, it cost about $100 US. That is
around $600 now. It sold 350,000 units
and was discontinued in 1975. Although
the odyssey was the first commercial
home console it wasn’t very popular in
japan. It still was a turning point for the
development of video games and
technology as a whole.
Now onto the most creative name for any video
game console. The Nintendo color TV-GAME.
Despite the fantastic name the game console did
very well in japan. Infact it is the highest selling
first generation video game console. It sold over
3,000,000 units in japan with its release date jun
1st 1977 and being discontinued in 1983. An
interesting fact about Nintendo is that they used
to make toys before making video games and
before that Nintendo used to make hotels for
prostitutes.
1980S-2000S
1980 was the year Nintendo became a well known
company around the world with their new creation.
The Nintendo Game & Watch. This little thing sold
over 43 million units! Compared to their last game
this was a huge success and the reason why
Nintendo is still here.
Three years after the game & watch Nintendo released
one of their most well known video game consoles. The
Nintendo entertainment system(NES) or in japan the
famicom (Family computer). The nes sold 61 million
units world wide with 19 million in japan. The nes
discontinued in 1993 but in japan it was only
discotinued in 2005.The nes turned into the snes. The
nes was only 8-bit while the snes was 16-bit. Overall the
snes sold around 50 million units world wide.
With a new console on the market an unlikely
company rises up to take on Nintendo. Sega is
back with their all new console the Mega
drive(Or Sega Genesis in America.) With
Sega making this they started the console
wars between Sega and Nintendo and the
companies knew that they were in it. They
were both racing to make the best new game
or console. Nintendo had mario and Sega had
sonic. Technically the Sega Genesis was
better. It came out in 1988 and was
discontinued in 1977. With it selling 30
million units.
Nintendo had a new idea for gaming. Instead of using a cartridge
they thought it would be cheaper and easier to make games with
CDS.
They partnered up with a small company called Sony. Complications
between the companies forced they to shut this idea down but Sony
wanted to keep on working on it. So they did. It later turned out to
become the PlayStation. A console that we all know today. This was
a revolutionary idea and it is the reason why most video game
consoles are here today. It came out in 1994 and was discontinued in
2000. It sold 102 million units. This later turned into the playstation
2,3,4 and the psps. Although it was only 32 bit it still could handle
3d. Not the most complex geometric shapes but it was still 3d
nonetheless.
Nintendo's response to the PlayStation was the
Nintendo 64. The n64 was fully 64 bits which
meant it could handle full 3d and was a turning
point in video games. Although it wasn’t cdrom
based it was very advanced. Worldwide it sold 33
million units. Being sold in 1996 and discontinued
in 2002.
Between all this was Sega. They were on the brink
of bankruptcy as they were not capable to hold up in
this competition. They made their last console in
1998 with the Sega Dreamcast. It only selling 9
million units. Being buried in the other companies
more advanced consoles.
2000-2020
In this time came out the playstation 2-3-4. The
playstation 2 became the most sold video game
console of all time. Microsoft decides to join in the
console competition with the xbox. The xbox came
out 2001 and was discontinued in 2009. Selling 24
million units.
Nintendo wants to make
something new. Something that
anyone can pick up and without
any knowledge of what a video
game is. So they created the wii.
They released it in 2006 and it
was a success. It sold 101
million units and was
discontinued in 2013.
JAPANESE VS NEW
ZEALAND GAMING
Gaming was much more popular in japan than it was in new Zealand. The similar things
about gaming in both cultures is the rich and shaky history. They both have changed very
much throughout the years.
