Belt and rope

drives

When we want to transmit the power from one shaft of the
machine to other shaft of the different machine or of same
machine, then we need some links or connection. That link or
connection, we use are belt or rope drives.
Belt drive

Light drives- These are used to

transmit small powers at belt
Types of Belt drives speeds upto about 10 m/s, as in
agricultural machines and small
machine tools.

Medium drives- These are used to Heavy drives- These are used to
transmit medium power at belt transmit large powers at belt
speeds over 10 m/s but up to 22 speeds above 22 m/s, as in
m/s, as in machine tools. compressors and generators.
Types of
Belt
Types of flat belt drive

• Open belt drive: This is used

with the shafts arranged
parallel and rotating in the
same direction. In this case,
the driver A pulls the belt
from one side and delivers it
to the other side. Thus, the
tension in the lowerside belt
will be more than that in the
upper side belt.
Crossed or twist belt drive:

• Shaft arranged parallel and

rotating in opposite direction.
The drivers pulls the belt
from one side(RQ) delivers it
to the other side(LM). The
tension in the RQ will be
greater than in the belt LM.
Quarter turn belt drive:

• Used with shaft arranged in

right angle and rotates in one
definite direction.
Compound belt drive
• Used when power is transmitted from one shaft to another through
the number of pulleys.
•
• Velocities Ratio between the driver and
driven.
• Let,
• D1= diameter of driver
Velocity •

D2-diameter of driver
N1=speed of driver in rpm

ratio of belt •

N2=speed of driven in rpm
Then, the velocity ratio formula

drive
can be written as,

• If t is the thickness of belt then,

• Slip in the belt drive is a phenomenon of
the relative motion between belt and
pulley.
• Due to insufficient grip of friction
between pulley and belt, there are some
relative motion in between those two is
present, this motion is called slip of the

Slip of belt
belt. Ideally it should be a zero.
• In other words, when the belt gets
mounted on slip arch of the pulley; At that
time due to inappropriate friction between
two the pulley travels with relatively
greater velocity leaving the belt behind.
• This virtue of relative motion is called as
slip in belt drives.
• It is the permanent deformation in belt

Creep of drive due to stress (tensile stress) acting

on it ,Due to running of belt over the
pulley there is friction. Heat is generated

belt due to this there is deformation belt. So,

creep is the deformation due to heat
generated.
Material • Leather belt- leather is important

used for material while making belt. Made

from steer(ox) leather which is cut
from either side of backbone of
steer.

making belt • Cotton/fabric belt- Made by folding

fabric to three or more layers and
stitching together. It is soak with
linseed oil to make it waterproof.
They are cheaper and suitable in
warm climate and in damped
atmosphere.
• Rubber belt- made by filling fabric with rubber and have thin layer of rubber over its
surface. They get damaged when it is contacted with oil and unsuitable for high
temperature. Reinforced with nylon string for greater tensile strength
Rope Drive

While transmitting power from one shaft to another when the distance between
wither shaft is excessive than we use rope drives.

• Fibres rope- Made from fibrous material such as cotton, manila, linen etc. when
they are bent there is a sliding of fibres causes rope to wear. So, they are
lubricated with tar, graphite. Distance between two pulleys are 60m apart.
Wire rope- made by twisting the thin metal steel for greater strength.
wire for transmitting power over a long distance(say upto 150m) then
wire ropes are used. Widely use in elevators, cranes, suspension bridges
etc. they get corrode
