Who are conductors?
- Person who directs in front of a group of ensemble
- Leader of the ensemble
- Interpret the music and communicate with the ensemble
How do they conduct?
- Hand gestures/other physical movements/eye contact
Musical Elements
- Meter and pulse
- Articulation
- Phrasing of the melody
- Dynamics
Conducting Pattern (2/4)
- Find your pulsebox/ictus
- Ictus: Point in a visible pattern that articulates the pulse of the music
1. Bring your hand upwards (preparation)
2. Bring it down and hit your pulsebox (beat 1)
3. Move your hand to the right
4. Come back and hit the pulsebox again (beat 2)
5. Repeat steps 2~4

Remember your ictus!

1. Preparation beat
2. Down and back up (beat 1)
3. Down and to the right (beat 2)
4. Middle then up (beat 3)

- The band magically turned into a singing band
