ABSTRACT

Steel frame structures are primarily used for large commercial structures such as industrial
buildings, garages, large agricultural buildings, warehouses as well as for bridges and high rise
buildings for many of its advantages over other form of construction such as high strength and
durability, ease of fabrication and less construction time etc. Steel frame structures are a beam-
column assembly which are often connected by weld or fasteners (bolts or rivets) forming a rigid
joint. This beam-column joint is the most vulnerable part in the entire structure which can be easily
damaged. In this study, a planar steel framed structure is modelled in the finite element framework
with two node beam elements having two degrees of freedom at each node. The joint damage is
introduced by modifying the structural properties of elements near to the joint. The response versus
time plots were obtained for both the damaged and the undamaged states and this data set is
collected . Deep learning (CNN) is introduced in order to detect vibration based damage in real
time. The advantage of CNN is its ability to extract optimal damage sensitive feature from raw
response-time signals.

Project Methodology
Problem Formulation
In order to identify the damage, a single storied 2-dimensional plane steel frame model is chosen.
The frame will be modelled using finite element method on commercially available MatLAB
software. 2D beam elements are used to model the frame with 2 degrees of freedom at each node.
The damage is introduced by reducing the cross-section of the beam elements near to the beam-
column joint on both the sides of the frame.
