Properties of Zinc

• Zinc is a coarse grained metal.

• Metallic zinc has a H.C.P Crystal structure.

• Zinc is bluish white metal with low melting point and

boiling point.

• In electrochemical series the zinc position is high.

• Zinc protects steel from corrosion.

• Melting point : 419.40C
• Boiling point : 9070C
• Specific heat : 0.0940 Cal/grm/0C
• Hardness on (moh’s scale) : 2.5
• Specific resistance : 0.96 Micro Ohms
• Heat of fusion : 24.09 Cal/gm

6
Uses of Zinc

• Major use of zinc is in galvanizing.

• Second most important use is in the die–casting of parts for

the automotive industry.

• Zinc is also used in photo engraving and printing plates.

• Zinc is used in Brass and Bronze alloys.

7
• Zinc oxide is used in the manufacture of viscose rayons,
enamels, glass etc.,

• Zinc sulphide along with phosphorous is used in

fluorescent lighting fixtures and television.

• Zinc sulphate is used in manufacture of pigment

lithophone.
