ROBOTICS

ROBOTS
• An electromechanical device that is:
- Reprogrammable
- Multifunctional
- Sensible for environment
• Conjures up a variety of image.
• Down to humanlike machine that exist to serve their creators.
• Derived from Czech Word – “ROBOTA” which means force labor.
ROBOTICS
• Was also coined by a writer – Isaac Asimov
ASIMOV
Proposed three “Laws of Robotics”
LAW ONE
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to
harm.
LAW TWO
A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings except where such orders would
conflict with the First law.
LAW THREE
A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the
First or Second law.
THREE PRIMARY CATEGORIES

•MANIPULATORS
•MOBILE ROBOTS
•MOBILE MANIPULATORS
MANIPULATOR
• Referred to as robot arms, manipulators are physically anchored to
their workplace.

• Usually involves a chain of controllable joints, enabling them to place

their effectors in any position within the workplace.

• They can be found in hospitals at times, assisting surgeons and in cars.

MOBILE ROBOTS
• have the ability to move about using wheels or robotic legs.

Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV ) - can drive autonomously on

streets, highways and also off-roads.
Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV / Drones)- commonly used for
surveillance, military operations, crop spraying and even deliveries.
Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) – used in deep-sea
explorations and underwater searches.

MOBILE MANIPULATORS
• Referred to as Humanoid Robots, these typically mimic the human
torso.
• Their task is made more difficult since they lack the rigidity that
anchors provide.
• FIRST ROBOT NAMED UNIMATE
- first industrial robot
-worked on a General Motors assembly line at the Inland Fisher
Guide Plant in Ewing Township
-invented by George Devol in the 1950s
• Robotic systems need to build in prior knowledge about the robot, its
physical environment and the tasks that the robot may be called upon
to perform so that the robot can learn quickly and perform safely.
• Robotics today brings together several concepts from AI and Machine.
