Resistance and Reactance in an AC Circuit

• When a DC voltage is applied to a resistance, the


value of the current that flows, according to Ohm’s
law, is proportional to the voltage: the greater the
voltage, the greater the current.

• The same is true when an AC voltage is applied to a


resistor as shown in Fig.

• As the voltage is increased, the current is increased;


as the voltage is decreased, the current is decreased.

• The maximum value of current and voltage occur at


the same time, and their zero values occur at the
same time.

  current and the voltage are in phase and the phase
angle is zero in a purely resistive circuit.
