GOOD MORNING

WELCOME TO MATHEMATICS CLASS

FOR GRADE 7
TODAY, WE WILL LEARN ABOUT
“CALCULATING FRACTIONS, ADDING
AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS”

1) What is of $45?
x 45 = = $9
2) What is of 48?
x 48 = 3 x 12 = 36
3) Rahel’s class has 32 pupils. Two-eightth are boys. How many are girls?
x 32 = 2 x 4 = 8
So, girls is 32 – 8 = 24

4) Fill in the missing numbers
of 30 = of . . . . .
x 30 = 30 : 5 = 6
6= x.... 6 x 2 = 12
So, of 30 = of 12

5) What are the missing numbers ?
a) of . . . = 20
x . . . . = 20 20 x = 10 x 3 = 30
b) of 42 = 21

x 42 = 21 = 21
21 y = 126
y = 126 : 21 = 6

2) a) of 35 = 30
= x 35 = 30
5a = 30
a=6
b) of . . . . = 35
35 x = 60
c) of 81 = 54
x 81 = 54
= 54 486 = 54b
b = 486 : 54 = 9

B) ADDING FRACTIONS
To add fractions different denominators you must first use equivalent fractions to make
the denominatorsthe same.
Example :
1) = =
2) + = 2 + ( + ) = 2 + ( = 2 + 1= 3
3) 5 + 2 = (5 + 2) + ( + ) = 7 +
=7+ = =8

4) +
= = = 1 =1
5) 7 + 3
= (7 + 3) + () = 10 + = 10 + 1 = 11

B) SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS
To subtract fractions with the denominators are different, you
have to make them the same using equivalent fractions.
Example :
1) - = =
2) 8 - = - = = = 7
3) 5 - 1 = (5 – 1) + - )
= 4+ = 4 =4

4) 7 -
= - = = = 6
5) 6 - 2
= (6 – 2) + ( - ) = 4 +
=4+ =4+
