Common mistakes in English:

Fall for Fell:Don’t say: John fall and broke his leg.
Say: John fell and broke his leg.
The verb is FALL - FELL - FALLEN

NOTE: FELL - FELLED - FELLED means to knock or cut


down,as”The wood-cutter felled a large tree.”

NOTE: FEEL - FELT - FELT means have a feeling,as”I feel sorry for
you.”

LIE & LAY:

1) LIE: ( to rest ) is an INTRANSITIVE verb so it never has an object ;

it’s also an IRREGULAR verb : LIE - LAY - LAIN - LYING

2) LAY: ( to put) is a transitive verb,so it always has an object ; it’s a


regular verb : LAY - LAID - LAID - LAYING
NOTE: Lay ; laid ; laid means also to produce eggs,as”The hen has
laid an egg.”
IDIOM : “Lay the table”or “Lay the cloth” is to prepare the table for a
meal.
3) LIE - LIED - LIED - LYING ( to make untrue statements; to tell
lies.) ”He’s a liar.”
Supply some form of LIE or LAY:

1) I shall go home and ....... down.
