 Galvanizing

• Galvanizing is a coating of Zinc to ferrous Materials to

protect them from corrosion.
• Metal cans, corrugated sheets, pipes, fencing wire are
galvanized by hot dipping.
• Molten Zinc reacts with steel to form Zn – Fe Alloy
• For marine applications, Mg is added to the molten Zinc.

 Electro Galvanizing

• Electro Galvanizing is always done in acid bath of

ZnSO4 or ZnCl2 at 650C-670C with a current density of
1200 to 3500 amp/m2 .
• Soluble Zinc anode or insoluble magnesite or lead
anodes are used.
• Coated article is phosphatised to passivate the active
Zinc surface.
• Alkaline Cyanide bath is used for irregular shaped
components.
