Tutorial 03
• Objective: Determine the variation in resistivity with the change in
temperature using NaCl solution resistivity curve and formula:
• Related Theory:
• Resistivity is a measure of the resisting power of a specified material to the flow of
an electric current. Saline water has low resistivity as compared to fresh water.
• The value of Rw can vary widely from well to well in some reservoirs because
parameters that affect it include salinity, temperature, freshwater invasion, and
changing depositional environments. However, several methods for determining the
reservoir water resistivity have been developed, including: chemical analysis of
produced water sample, direct measurement in resistivity cell, water catalogs,
spontaneous potential (SP) curve, resistivity-porosity logs, and various empirical
methods.

• Although
  direct measurement of Rw in a resistivity cell is
aIways preferred, chemical analysis of water samples is still
performed. In many cases, Rw is estimated using a logging tool,
e.g., from the spontaneous potential log.
• The mathematical interpretation of the graph has led to
formation of an equation that can tell the resistivity of water
sample at one temperature if the resistivity of same water
sample is known at other temperature. The formulae are:

Where,
R1 is the resistivity of the solution at temperature T1 and R2 is the
resistivity of the solution at temperature T2

Problem Statement
• Resistivity of a water sample is 0.4 Ω m at 70OF; what is its
resistivity at 200OF.

a) The resistivity of the formation brine 200 using NaCl
solution resistivity curve and formula ºF .

Solution Steps (a)
• Determine the resistivity values using Figure Resistivity of
NaCl solution curve..
• Determine the resistivity values using formula given above.
• Compare the two values calculated in Step 01, and Step 02.

Procedure
• To determine the resistivity using NaCl solution curve
➢ Locate the 70℉ and 0.4Ω on the NaCl solution curve.
➢ Draw a trend curve across the chart, which passes through
that point.
➢ Locate the resistivity in Ω at 200℉ on that curve, which is
0.15Ω.

To determine the
resistivity using formulae
Using temperatures in ⁰F: Using temperatures in ⁰C:
R1 =0.44 ohm-m R1 =0.44 ohm-m
T1 = 70⁰F T1 = 70 ⁰F = 21.11 ⁰C
T2 = 200⁰F T2 = 200 ⁰F = 93.33 ⁰C
Then, Then,
R2 = 0.4 R2= 0.4

R2= 0.149 ohm-m R2 = 0.149 ohm-m

Result Analysis
• The resistivity will decrease when there is increase in
temperature. The solubility of water is increased which helps
more salts dissolve into water hence the resistivity decreases.
