KPI – Key Performance Indicator
• Network performance can be evaluated based on Performance
Indicators (PI).
• Performance Indicators can be mapped directly to either a
measurement counter or a formula that is composed of several
counters.
• Most important Performance Indicators which provides essential
figures/data on any improvement or degradation the network
performance and vital information for switching network planning
and design are classified as Key Performance Indicators.
• KPIs are continuously monitored on a regular basis in order to
observe any improvements to the network, discover any
abnormalities in the network and proper actions taken, understand
the subscriber growth and any changes to traffic profile so that the
proper network expansion is planned accordingly.

•Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are derived from Performance Indicator (PI) measurements.
•A KPI is normally a computational result of a number of lower level PI(s) i.e.: raw counters.

NSS KPIs
Circuit congestion in circuit groups <= 0%
• Indicates the amount of lost call attempts due to circuit congestion.
(Impact I the possible loss of revenue $$$$$)

Circuit utilization in circuit groups <= 90%

• Indicates when a circuit group is reaching its maximum utilization or
when it is under utilized.
( Proper actions required in order to avoid congestion towards a
destination. )

 Derived from Circuit Group Measurements.

NSS KPIs
Internal Failure(s) <= 1 %
• Indicates the impact of MSC internal failure to the overall drop call rate.

External Failure(s) <= 5%

• Indicates the impact of external failure e.g. remote switching equipment, BSS
network to the overall drop call rate.

Subscriber related Failure(s)<= 5%

• Indicates the impact of subscriber errors e.g. misdialling to the overall drop
call rate

 Derived from Traffic Category and Circuit Group Measurements.

 Clear Code analysis provides information on the reasons of failure(s).

NSS KPIs
Total Successful BHCA => 90%
• Indicates the amount of successful call attempts relative to the total
number of call attempts. This call attempts are classified as normal in
nature and any degradation indicates abnormalities to the network.
• Derived from Trafficability Performance Field Report => daily clear
code analysis.

Call answer rate>= 50%

• Indicates amount of actual revenue generating calls ( $$$$) in the
exchange.
• Derived from Trafficability Performance Field Report => daily clear
code analysis.

NSS KPIs
Signaling link utilization <= 0.2 Erl in normal condition
<= 0.4 Erl in abnormal condition
• Indicates that the signaling link load are within the specified
limits as signaling is vital in any switching network.
• Derived from Signaling link measurements.

Signaling Link availability >= 99%

• Indicates stability of signaling links which can be degraded by
unstable transmission media.
• Derived from Signaling link measurements.

• Indicates that MSC CPUs are performing within limits.
• Derived from Computer Load measurement(s).

MB Average load , 50%

• Indicates that MSC MBs are performing within limits.
• Derived from MB-Message Bus Load measurement(s).

• Indicates the traffic profile of subscribers for planning and design
purposes. ( No. of subscriber x traffic/subs = Total Traffic )
• Derived from Circuit Group measurements.

• Indicates the average duration of calls for planning and design
purposes.
• Derived from Circuit Group measurements.
