Web User Interface
What is web user interface?
The Web UI is an HTML-based application used to
configure and manage the server appliance from a
remote client.

By extending the Web UI, we can build a consistent,

reliable, and extensible UI.
• A Web refers to a pool of information where users
can access unlimited amount of data by means of
web interfaces.
• Designing of web interfaces involves design of
movement of data and presenting the data in a
much understandable way which is easily accessible
to the users.
• A balance between structure and relationships of
menus, content, linked documents or graphics give a
correct interface design which makes easier for
users to view the information and analyse it.
Difficulties in designing the web interface
1. HTML, a commonly used language for designing the
web interfaces can be used only by the technical
users where as ordinary users find difficulty in using
it.

2. There are two types of movement in browser

‘forward’ and ‘back’. Since “back to where” and
“forward to where” is mostly not known.

3. The design and flow of information of huge amount

is becoming very complex and require great deal of
understanding in users.
Popularity of the web
Web has completely changed computing.

Web permits the users spread through out the world

to interact, access content, publish and heard.

The web permits the individual to control display

and presentation of web pages.
The use of web in typography and color
transformation, graphics activations and decisions
made to transmit data not over nonsecure channels
or to allow or deny cookies has increased its
popularity.

Web also has raised the number of internet hosts

from thousands to millions .
Characteristics of the Web user interface

GUI and Web Interfaces have similar characteristics

like both are software designs.
They are used by the people.
They are interactive.

Presented through screens and are composed of

many similar characteristics.
But,
They do have some significant differences.
GUI Vs Web User Interfaces:
1. Attention of users
GUI:
Applications, Data, Transactions and processes
express a GUI system. These require thorough
focus of users in order to complete their task.

Web:
web consists of pool of information and users
move back and forward in any way in order to get
content from several pages.
2. Movement
GUI:
users move through trees, lists, menus, wizards
and dialogs.
Web:
web users move through links, typed URL’s and
bookmarks. Web does not impose many constraints
on users.
Navigation is strong and highly visible concept.
Huge size of the web makes users lost of “ sense of
place”.
3. Response
GUI:
The GUI system responds to the users request
immediately and it is fixed.
Web:
The web response to the users request is variable,
depending on line transmission, system loads and
page content.
Frustration arises and users become upset due to
large waiting.
4. Devices
GUI:
Modems and the Monitors are the interfaces of
GUI as well as WI.
Web:
Now-a-days web can be accessed from mobile
devices to work stations.
5. Presentation Items
GUI:
Windows, menus, data, toolbars, messages and
controls are the important presentation items of GUI
on screen.
Web:
The browser and page are two items in web systems.
6. Security
GUI:
GUI system provides strict security to their users.
Security is easily achievable for most home PC
users.

Web:
The web is famous for breakage for security.
7. Area of User concept
GUI:
The applications and programs manage the users
conceptual space.
The access to data is controlled by programs and
space is provided to store the data inside the system
itself.
Web:
The web user has huge and infinite amount of area
to store the data.
8. Context
GUI:
A good sense of context is achieved by users,
because of GUI systems.
Web:
Poor sense of context because the number of roots
are unlimited
9. Visible Styling
GUI:
There are limitations by toolkit in customizing
visual styles of GUI systems.
Web:
Artistic, individual and unlimited presentation
styles are allowed.
The Merging of Graphical Systems and the Web:
Any organization need a closed, graphical systems
where internal communication is performed, useful
information is made available for employees.
These requirements can be fulfilled by a large and
centralized databases but an access/link to database and
processing of information is to be done through a
transparent network application. WEB process the
strength to link databases and process the requests
occurring from various machines within a
company/org.
Hence, the Graphical system and the Web are merged
into a common entity and these web systems are called
intranets.
Internet:
An internet is a world-wide network of computers
accessible by millions of people who knows their
IP(Internet Protocol) Address.
Intranet:
An intranet is a collection of private computers
within an organization.
If a connection is established from the intranet
network to the internet then intranet is placed beside
a firewall.
This firewall provides the access control between
the intranet and the internet.

intranet versus the internet? 3m
