What is an electric generator?
An Electric generator is a device which is
used to produce electric energy, which
can be stored in batteries or can be
directly supplied to the homes, shops,
offices, etc.
Electric
generators work
on the principle
of
electromagnetic
induction.
PRINCIPLE
Electromagnetic induction is
the production of voltage or
electromotive force due to a
change in the magnetic field.
Many electrical components
and types of equipment work
based on the principle
of electromagnetic induction.
A conductor coil is rotated
rapidly between the poles of a
horseshoe type magnet .
This change in the magnetic
field is called the Faraday’s
Law. .
Any change in the magnetic
environment of a coil of wire
will cause a voltage to be
induced in the coil.
When the coil rotates, it cuts
the magnetic field which lies
between the two poles of the
magnet.
The magnetic field will
interfere with the electrons in
the conductor to induce a flow
of electric.
FEATURES OF ELECTRIC GENERATORS

Power Fuel
Low as well as high power Multiple fuel options such as diesel,
requirements can be met easily by petrol, natural gas, LPG, etc. are

Portability Noise
There are generators available in the Some generator models have noise
market which have wheels or handles reducing technology, which allows them
fitted on them so they can be moved to be kept at close proximity without any
from one place to another. noise pollution problems.
APPLICATIONS

CALCULATING ENERGY USE

Power: kilowatts
Time: hours
Energy = kWh

Energy = power x time

STEPS

STEP 01 STEP 02
amount of time your check your devices power
appliance runs or is ( should always be in
used kilowatts )
STEP 04 STEP 03
check its cost, ask your multiply the Time
electricity provider bow and Power
much they charge for kWh
then multiple it to your kWh
1. A typical light bulb uses 60 watts of power while the
air conditioner of a typical apartment uses a 3 kw of
power.

A.How much energy in kWh is used up b the light and

AC separately if each device runs continuously for
one month?

B. How much would it cost per month to run each

device continuously at an utility rate of $0.13 per kWh?
