RUBRIC

Madelyn V. Rasgo
Resource Speaker
What is a Rubric?

In education terminology, rubric means "a scoring

guide used to evaluate the quality of students'
constructed responses". Put simply, it is a set of
criteria for grading assignments.
Why Rubrics?

◍ Give students a clear understanding of the assignment & concrete details about
how to obtain a particular score
◍ Allow parents to understand in detail how a grade was earned
◍ Encourage students to self-assess and reflect on their own performance
◍ Makes assessment easier for teachers and less subjective
How to Use Rubrics with Students

◍ Look at models: Show students examples of good and not so-good work.
Make the characteristics that make the good ones good and the bad ones
bad.
◍ List criteria: Use the discussion of models to begin a list of what counts in
quality work.
◍ Articulate gradations of quality: Describe the best and worst levels of quality,
then fill in the middle levels based on your knowledge of common problems
and the discussion of not-so-good work.
◍ Practice on models: Have students use the rubrics to evaluate the models you
gave them in Step 1.
◍ Use self and peer assessment: Give students their task. As they work stop
them occasionally for self and peer assessment
◍ Revise: Always give studenst time to revise their work based on the
feedback they get in Step 5.
◍ Use teacher assessment: Use the same rubric students used to assess
their work yourself.
Characteristics of Effective Rubrics

◍ Criteria - An effective rubric must possess a specific list of criteria, so

students know exactly what the teacher is expecting.
◍ Descriptions - effective rubrics offer a lot of descriptive language. The
rubric describes exactly what is expected.
◍ Reliability - A “good” rubric should be able to be used by various teachers
and have them all arrive at similar scores.
◍ Validity - A rubric possessing validity, scores what is central to the
performance and assignment, not what is easy for the eye to see and
simple for the teacher to grade.
Advantages of Rubrics: Teacher

◍ Objective and consistent among all students

◍ Leads to insight concerning the effectiveness of instruction
◍ Clarifies criteria in specific terms
◍ Data analysis becomes easier
◍ Shows areas in need of improvement
◍ Establishes “ground rules” to resolve potential academic disputes
Advantages of Rubrics: Students

◍ See the goal to ACHIEVE the goal

◍ Helps define “quality”
◍ Teachers expectations are clear
◍ Manner in which to meet the expectations are clear
◍ Students can better judge and revise their own work and assist their peers
◍ Vehicle for student feedback
TYPES OF RUBRICS

HOLISTIC
◍and ANALYTIC RUBRICS
HOLISTIC RUBRIC

- single criteria rubrics (one-dimensional)

used to assess participants' overall
achievement on an activity or item based
on predefined achievement levels;
- performance descriptions are written in
paragraphs and usually in full sentences.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Holistic
Rubrics

Advantages Disadvantages
◍ Emphasis on what the learner is ◍ Does not provide specific

◍ Saves time by minimizing the varying levels spanning the
number of decisions raters make. criteria points it can be difficult
◍ Can be applied consistently by to select the single best

reliability. ◍ Criteria cannot be weighted.
ANALYTIC RUBRIC

- two-dimensional rubrics with levels of achievement

as columns and assessment criteria as rows. Allows
you to assess participants' achievements based on
multiple criteria using a single rubric. You can assign
different weights to different criteria and include an
overall achievement by totaling the criteria;
- written in a table form.
Advantages of Analytic Rubrics

Advantages Disadvantages
◍ Provides useful ◍ Takes more time to
feedback on areas of create and use than a
strenght and holistic rubric.
weaknesses ◍ Time consuming to

Research Paper (Holistic Rubric)
Score Criteria

4 (80-100%) Research paper demonstrates complete understanding and execution

of the assigned objectives. Thesis statement/argument is clearly stated,
complex and original, and the writing does not spend excessive time on
any one point of development at the expense of developing other points
in the body of the paper. Writing is also error-free, without ambiguity,
and reads smoothly, creatively, and with a purpose.

3 (70-79%) Research paper demonstrates considerable understanding and

execution of the assigned objectives. Thesis statement/argument is
stated, verges on the complex and original, and the writing shows
accuracy and balance in developing body points, but may exhibit
occasional weaknesses and lapses in correctness. Writing also has
some errors and ambiguities, yet does read clearly and coherently.
2 (60-69%) Research paper demonstrates some understanding and execution
of the assigned objectives. Thesis statement/argument is faintly
stated and/or expected and not confident, and the writing is
inconsistent in terms of balance in developing body points, and
exhibits weaknesses and lapses in correctness. Writing also has
many errors and ambiguities, and may read confusingly and
incoherently.

1 (50-59%) Research paper demonstrates limited understanding and execution of

the assigned objectives. Thesis statement/argument is simplistic,
unoriginal, and/or not present at all, and the writing is unbalanced in
developing body points, weak, and incomplete. Writing also has
numerous errors and ambiguities, and reads confusingly and
incoherently.

the RUBRIC made.
Example Essay in Science and Technology
Hazards and Benefits of Science and
Technology Essay

◍ The last two centuries have seen monumental changes to our lives, brought forth
by advancements in science and technology. These advancements have their
hazards and benefits in the society. It is these negative and positive impacts that
this paper will be looking at. Right from the days that men discovered how to
make fire, discoveries have come streaming our way at an amazing rate.
Telephones, cars, rockets and computers have all been brought by science.
Undeniably these inventions have made our lives better and tolerable.
◍ The benefits reaped through the inventions in medicine cannot be underscored or
under estimated. It has helped us to cope with our bodies and health in
unaccountable ways. The benefits of medicine now can enable us live a full life
with the best health possible. Many epidemics in the early days caused
immeasurable human sufferings and losses of untold magnitude, and so too
could small pox and polio have done had it not been for science, leading to a
discovery of effective vaccinations.
◍ Medicine is saving lives and giving patients a second chance to live. Medicine
continues to help us fight deadly diseases while giving us an opportunity to take
control of our lives. It is just a matter of time that pandemics such as AIDS and
at present COVID 19 will have a cure.
◍ Our world today is trying to grapple with how to cope with the hazards
caused by the ever expanding inventions in science and technology.
Developments in the science and technology sector in the last centuries
have seen an increase of global warming occasioned by the continued
depletion of the ozone layer. This is greatly caused by: continued use of
fossil fuel, air transportation and green house technology to mention a few.
This has led to a change in climatic patterns, making it unpredictabley
hazardous to the humanity.
◍ The increased cases of earthquakes, droughts, floods and desertification
have been attributed to global warming. Another example of the hazards
brought forth by science and technology is the improvements of inventions
in the art of warfare. Human beings were faced with the reality that they
could fight themselves to extinction. This is a living example of how
science and technolgy can lead to a hazardous end of humans.
◍ All in all, many people are on agreement that the few isolated hazards that
can result from science and technology cannot water down the benefits
arising from the same. A simple cost benefits analysis indicate that
humanity stand to gain more as inventions in science and technology
continue to be realized.
