Square of Binomial

(a+b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
(a+b) (a+b) = a + 2ab + b
2 2

(a–b) (a–b) = a – 2ab + b

2 2
Steps: (a + b)2
1. Square the 1st term. [ a2 ]
2. Multiply the 1st, 2nd term and 2. [ + 2ab ]
3. Square the 2nd term. [ +b2 ]

Note:
• The answer should be a trinomial(three terms).
• The answer is called Perfect Square Trinomial
Square of Binomial = Perfect Square Trinomial
(a+b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2 .
Product of Sum &
Difference of Two Terms
(a+b) (a–b) = a2 – b2
(a–b) (a+b) = a2 – b2
Steps: (a+b) (a–b)

1. Square the 1st term. [ a2 ]

2. Square the 2nd term. [ b2]
3. Use subtraction operation. [ a2 – b2 ]

Note:
• The answer should be a binomial (two terms).
• The answer is called Difference of Two Squares
Product of Sum & Diff = Difference of Two Squares
(a+b) (a–b) = a2 – b2 .
Square of Multinomial
(a+b+c)2 = a2+b2+c2 +2ab +2bc +2ac
Steps: (a b c)
+ + 2

1. Square all the terms. [ a2 + b2 + c2 ]

2. Multiply a term to another term and 2. [ +2ab ]
3. Repeat step 2 until all pairing of terms is done.
[ + 2bc + 2ac ]
Note:
• If we square a trinomial the answer should have six terms
(a + b + c)2 = a2 + b2 + c2 +2ab +2bc +2ac
• If we square a polynomial with four terms the answer
should have ten terms.
(a+b+c+d)2 = a2 + b2 + c2 + d2 +2ab +2bc +2cd +2ac +2bd +2ad
