What is Graffiti?

- Is
an unauthorised and
deliberate defacement of surface
or property using Heavy-duty
marking pens, paints, large
crayons, lipstick and just about
anything else that leaves a mark
ANTI- GRAFFITI COATING
• is a surface treatment or coating that is used in
graffiti-prone areas for the prevention of
permanent adhesion of graffiti to the substrate and
which aids efficient and easy removal of graffiti.
• Available in clear where it is necessary to maintain
the natural appearance of surface
• And pigmented or coloured system – a dual
purpose of painting out graffiti and providing
subsequent protection
CLASSIFICATION
I. SACRIFICIAL:
- based on acrylate, biopolymers and waxes
- low sheen appearance but is visible on the
surface
- 2 coats required
- high pressure water cleaning (hot/cold) is
preferred
- exposure to chemical removal is limited
- needs recoating when graffiti is removed and
every 4 - 5 years or depending the durability of the
coating
II. Semi-Sacrificial:
- high build coatings
- usually based on acrylic either silicone or
PU modified or both
- shed/erode a few microns every removal
cycle
- further coats are reapplied to restore the
original appearance before the coating is
completely worn away,
- generally reapplied every 2nd removal
-using a combination of graffiti removal
solvent and high-pressure washer.
III. Non-Sacrificial ( Permanent)
- more expensive than sacrificial coatings,
but if used appropriately only have to be
applied once.
- can withstand several cycles of
defacement/cleaning before recoating is
necessary
- fall into two categories:
a. Penetrating/Impregnation surface
treatments
b. Permanent Film-forming
PENETRATING/IMPREGNATING SURFACE
TREATMENT
• Either water based or solvent based siloxanes
• Invisible low sheen appearance
• Maintaining the natural look of the substrate
• 1 coat required or depending on the porosity
of the substrate
• High pressure water cleaning is preferred
• Needs recoating after 5 cleaning cycles
PERMANENT FILM FORMING
• Usually two pack system – water based or solvent-
based where solvent-based is preferred due to its
durability and chemical resistance
• Either based on polyurethane, nanoparticles, or
fluorinated hydrocarbons
• Clear and pigmented
• Semi-gloss to high full gloss finish
• 2 coats required – recoating every 8 – 10 years
• Requires solvent type or water type graffiti remover
• Requires experienced applicator
CLEANING METHODS
1. Abrasive methods – wet or dry sand blasting can be too
damaging to both treated and untreated substrate
2. Hot or cold high pressure water cleaning with or without
detergents
3. Heat – steam cleaning can be used to remove some paints but a
high level of expertise is required to ensure that volatiles are not
driven into porous concrete or masonry
4. Chemical removal –
-organic solvent blend soften, swell and partly dissolve the
marking medium and allow removal by cloth, brush, scrubbing with
water and detergent or low pressure water jet. Chemical removers
must be compatible with the associated anti-graffiti coatings.
- inorganic caustic based don’t breakdown the markings and are
not preferred

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
•Durability – non-yellowing & UV resistant
•Resistant to abrasion
•Resistant to graffiti remover
•Resistant to moisture condensation
•Early development of solvent resistance & film hardness
•Good adhesion - The applied coating system shall have an adhesion
value of greater than 0.75 MPa to the substrate in accordance with AS
1580.408.5. (Main roads: 2.0MPa for permanent; 0.25MPa for
sacrificial)
•Shall pass a natural outdoor exposure of not less than 10 years
(permanent)
•guaranteed ‘Graffiti Removal’ life of at least eight cycles of defacement
and removal from the date of application. (permanent)
• Shall pass a natural outdoor exposure of not less than 5 years from
date of exposure (sacrificial)
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS
• The finished coating system shall have a minimum wet film
thickness of 175 μm and a minimum anti-graffiti coating dry
film thickness of 100 μm.
• Where an anti-graffiti coating is also used as an anti-
carbonation coating its minimum dry film thickness shall be
150 μm and shall also comply with the minimum performance
criteria as stated in Clause 685.18(a)(iii) for anti-carbonation
coating.
• The coating shall be impermeable to chlorides, water, carbon
dioxide and acid rain but shall allow the transmission of water
vapour (permeable to water vapour)
• Good anti-carbonation capabilities
• The applied coating system shall not have more than an “Oil”
gloss (Boller) panel 70, to AS 1580.602.3.
FOR ANTI-GRAFFITI COATING WITH ANTI-
CARBONATION CAPABILITIES
1. Equivalent Air Layer Thickness (R) - 150 metres
2. Equivalent Thickness of Concrete (Sc) - 450 mm
3. Co2 Diffusion Co-efficient (cm2/s) - 2 x 10-7
4. Water vapour equivalent air layer thickness (Sd) of less
than 4 metres
5. Dry film thickness of at least 150 μm (micron)
6. Water or acrylic based solvent free unless otherwise
approved by the Superintendent.

CONCLUSION
• The removability of graffiti depends on the type of
substrate surfaces and the chemical composition of
the marking materials
• Chemical removal and wet abrasive blasting not
only damage surfaces but also leaves unsightly
markings
• Anti-graffiti coatings are applied to expose surfaces
to facilitate subsequent removal of graffiti
preventing the deep penetration of marking into
pores & by preventing a firm attachment of the
markings to the surface
