Mind’s On How does an airbag work?

Inside airbags is a salt called sodium azide. This substance is VERY toxic to
humans. When a car crashes, a sensor goes off that releases heat – causing the
sodium azide to decompose into sodium metal and nitrogen gas, which inflates the
car’s air bag.

RECALL: Physical and Chemical Changes

 PHYSICAL changes are changes in state or form. Most importantly, the

substance does not change. Nothing NEW is produced.
 Quantitative: Can be MEASURED
 Qualitative: Can be OBSERVED
 CHEMICAL changes are when a new substance is formed. There are 5 pieces of
evidence that a chemical change has occurred:
 Colour Change
 Temperature Change
 Gas Production
 pH Change
 Solid Formation (Precipitate)
Word Equations
 Skeleton Equation: Uses chemical formulas of
compounds and elements to show what happens
during a chemical reaction.
H 2 + O 2 = H 2O
 Word Equation: uses words instead of chemical
formulas to describe what happens to reactants
and products during a chemical reaction
Hydrogen + Oxygen → Water

We can read this as: Hydrogen and Oxygen react to

produce Water.

Using our naming principles, we can switch between

skeleton equations and word equations.
Writing Word Equations

Skeleton equation: Na + CaCl2 → NaCl + Ca

What is the word equation?

1. Find the element names on the periodic table.
2. Use your naming principles to name compounds.
3. Rewrite your equation.

Word Equation: sodium + calcium chloride → sodium chloride + calcium

Example:
Skeleton Equation: Al2O3 → Al + O2

1. Find the element names on the periodic table.

2. Use your naming principles to name compounds.
3. Rewrite your equation.

Word Equation: aluminum oxide → aluminum + oxygen

Types of Reactions
4 Main Types
Justin and Selena met in the music
1. Synthesis Reaction industry. Before we knew it they were
inseparable!
Synthesis in Chemistry

 A synthesis reaction or direct combination reaction is a type of chemical

reaction in which two or more simple substances combine to form a more
complex product.

A B AB
EX. MgO + H2O → Mg(OH)2
magnesium oxide + water → magnesium hydroxide
2. Decomposition Justin and Selena finally called it quits for
good after being on again off again.
Reaction
Decomposition in Chemistry

 A decomposition reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which one reactant

breaks apart yielding two or more products.

AB A B

EX. Mg(OH)2 → MgO + H2O

magnesium hydroxide → magnesium oxide + water
3. Single Displacement Justin and Selena split up, and he started
dating (and eventually married) Hailey
Reaction Baldwin.
Single Displacement in Chemistry

 A single displacement reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which one an

atom or group of atoms is replaced by another atom.

AB C AC B

EX. 2NaBr + Cl2 → 2NaCl + Br2

sodium bromide + chlorine gas → sodium chloride + bromine
After this, Selena Gomez went on to date
4. Double The Weeknd. IF Hailey and the Weeknd
had dated previously – this would be a
Displacement Reaction couples swap.
Double Displacement in Chemistry

 A double displacement reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which two

different atoms or groups of atoms in two different compounds trade places.

AB CD AD CB

EX. 2NaBr + MgCl2 → 2NaCl + MgBr2

Sodium bromide + magnesium chloride → sodium chloride + magnesium bromide
