This document describes the design of a manual corn shredder operated by a spur gear mechanism. The corn shredder aims to more easily remove corn kernels from cobs in a less labor-intensive manner than traditional manual shelling. The design includes a feeding hopper, spur gear mechanism to operate the shredder, and a screen to separate shelled kernels from cobs. Formulas are provided to calculate the shredding efficiency and damage percentage of the prototype corn shredder. The testing of the prototype will be conducted in Misamis Oriental, Philippines.

Mechanism Researcher: Rickson C. Cagalawan Ronmark C. Garcia Introduction. • Corn is one of the most important cereal crops in the world after wheat and rice. It is one of the sources of iron, protein, vitamin B, carbohydrate, and minerals. It is used in human feeding, mechanical aspects for producing, corn oil, starch, syrup, alcohol, acids, and dry food for the animal. • Maize shelling is defined as the removal of grains from the cob by initial impact, and rubbing action as the material passes through a limited clearance between the cylinder, and concave bars. • The traditional way of maize shelling is by the use of bare hands. Some have come up with tools that could also make the work easier. As time passes by, there are already lots of corn sheller machines that are present in the industry. This study aims to design a mini corn sheller that operates manually by the use of spur gear mechanism on it. The design can be easily transported and does not depend on electricity or fuel to operate. The design will help the farmers in lessen the effort and time of shelling the corn. Objective of the Study • The objective of the study is to design and calculate the shredding efficiency of Manual Corn shredder Operated by Spur Gear Mechanism.
1. To design a Manual Corn shredder Operated by Spur Gear Mechanism.
2. To fabricate a prototype Manual Corn shredder Operated by Spur Gear Mechanism. 3. To determine the shredding efficiency of the Manual Corn shredder Operated by Spur Gear Mechanism. Research Locale • This study will be design and fabricate in Mambayaan Balingasag Misamis Oriental. • The testing of the prototype will be conduct in Barangay Mandangoa Balingasag Misamis Oriental. PROJECT DESIGN Front View and Back view of the Design. Top View of the Design. Side View of the Design. Bottom View of the Design • The picture shows the design of a corn shredder. It shows that the design manual corn shredder is used for removing or shelling the kernels of corns. Thus, the corn shredder will use Spur Gear as an innovation to operate and improve the efficiency of the corn shredder procedure. The top view of the design shows the feeding hopper of the design corn shredder which is the cob will feed on the feeding hopper. The right side view of the design shows the exit of the cob after shelling the kernels of it. The bottom view of the design shows the screen which is to strain the cob and only kernels can pass through it. Design Formula • Efficiency Formulas • Shredding Eff. = quantity of shelled grain obtained from all outlets in kg Total grain input in kg
• Unshelled Eff. = quantity of unshelled grain obtained from all outlets in kg
Total grain output in kg
• Visible Damage % = broken grain from outlet in kg Total grain input in kg • G.R = N1/N2 = T2/T1 ; G.R= Gear Ratio, T= teeth • P= 2πNT / 60 ; P= power, T= torque, N= speed • E = Pout/Pin ; E= efficiency End.
