NGT FEEDING

A tube that is inserted through the

nose, down the throat and esophagus,
and into the stomach. It can be used
to give drugs, liquids, and liquid
food, or used to remove substances
from the stomach.
TYPES OF FEEDING
➢ Bolus Feeding
- Is a type of feeding method using a syringe to deliver
formula through the tube.
- Also called as “gravity feeding”.
TYPES OF FEEDING
➢ Bolus Feeding
- Entails administration of 200-400 ml
of formula over 15 - 60 minutes.
TYPES OF FEEDING
➢ Continuous Feeding
- Is a type of feeding method given
by pump over a long period of
time, usually for 8 - 24 hours.
PURPOSE
● To feed with fluids when oral intake is not possible
● To provide adequate nourishment
● To administer medication
INDICATIONS
● Head and neck injury
● Coma
● Obstruction of oropharynx
● Severe anorexia nervosa
● Recurrent episodes of aspiration
● Increased metabolic needs
● Poor oral intake
PROCEDURES OF
NGT FEEDING
(Bolus Feeding)
1. Review the patient’s medical order including;
● the type of formula
● amount
● infusion type and rate
● frequency and timing of administration
● residual volume checks
● amount of water used to flush the tube
1. Explain the procedure to the patient.
3. Wash your hands.

4. Gather equipment and place on clean and flat surface.

5. Position the patient in a semi-recumbent position or
elevated to an angle of at least 30° during and after
feeding for at least one hour.

6. Measure the correct amount

of formula and warm it to the desired
temperature.
7. Inspect the nares for discharge
or irritant, or skin breakdown.
7. Check the tube placement.

8. Clamp the tube.

6. Attach the syringe to the feeding tube.
7. Pour the formula into the syringe.
8. Unclamp the tube.
9. Allow the formula to run for the same
amount of time as prescribed.
10. Keep the syringe no higher than 6 inch above from
the patient’s stomach.
11. Continue the feeding until the prescribed amount is
given.
12. Then, flush the tube with the prescribed amount of
water.
13. Clamp the tube.
PROCEDURES OF
NGT FEEDING
(Continuous Feeding)
1. Review the patient’s medical order including;
● the type of formula
● amount
● infusion type and rate
● frequency and timing of administration
● residual volume checks
● amount of water used to flush the tube

1. Explain the procedure to the patient.

3. Wash your hands.

4. Gather equipment and place on clean and flat surface.

5. Check for proper NG placement
➢ Observe and document proper location of external
tube markings.
➢ Visualize gastric contents
6. Pour feeding/fluids into feeding container/bag.
7. Run feeding through tubing to the tip and clamp
tubing.
8. Hang container on pole.
9. Place tubing into pump and sets flow rate.
10. Attach adaptor and tubing
to NG tube.
11. Open NG clamp
7. Program pump to prescribed
feeding rate.
ADMINISTRATION

OF MEDICATION
VIA NGT
1. Pour liquid medication into medicine cup.
(Tablets must be crushed and capsules
opened)

2. Assemble equipments and bring to the bedside.

3. Clamp the drainage tubing and the NG tube.
4. Disconnect the drainage NG tube from the drainage
tubing.
5. Remove the plunger from the syringe. Insert the syringe
tip into the NG tube and pour the medication into the
syringe. Release the clamp, allowing the medication to flow
into the nasogastric tube.

6. Follow the medication with 30 ml of water to clear the

tube. Replace clamp.
7. Reconnect the NGT to the drainage tubing, leaving the
clamps in place. Clamped for one hour to allow absorption
of the medication, unless otherwise ordered.

8. Record the time, medication type and amount, and the

amount of water administered on the I&O worksheet. Also
note the time the tube was clamped and the time it is to be
unclamped.
MAINTAINING TUBE
PATENCY
❏ Flush feeding tubes with 30 mL of water before
and after bolus feeding.
❏ Every 4 hours during the continuous feeding and
after checking for gastric residuals.
❏ Flush feeding also before and after administration
of medicine.
