About Selection of Research Topic?

 Research is an endeavor to discover answers to
intellectual and practical problems through the
application of scientific method.
 Research is the systematic process of collecting and

analyzing information (data) in order to increase our

understanding of the phenomenon about which we
are concerned or interested
 Research is the process of finding solutions to a problem after
a thorough study and analysis of the situational factors

 Research provides the needed information that guides policy

makers/researchers/analyst/managers to make informed
decisions to successfully deal with problems

 The information provided could be the result of a careful

analysis of data gathered first hand or of data that are already
available
 So According to -Redman and Mory.

 “Research is a systematized effort to gain new

knowledge”.

There is a famous Chinese proverb “The longest journey

begins with a single step “

 No specific or special formula for selection of the research

topic
 Self interest of the students with some freedom
 Focus on breath of knowledge first not the depth
 Personal experience (Realize your expertise and limitations)
 By sharing or discussing the research topic
How to select a topic?
 Start from broad area of interest like Particular
problem or subject.

E.g. Terrorism (institutional, economic and social

aspects)
focus on current research in your field, any
controversy, comparative study can be repeated in
other direction

 Identify variables of your interest

How to select a topic?
Study in one topic can be re-organised in other
topic (i.e. Institutional role in growth and
development, in trade, in inflow of FDI and
bilateral trade).
 Question raising will decide your way of selecting

topic
 Be prepared to revisit the topic selection if

needed.
 Try to read as much as possible to build up the

foundation for your research.
