Problems Relating to Circles

Example
• 1. Find the equation of the circle in general form
whose center is at (0, 1) and tangent to the line x = 2
+ y.
•
• 2. Find the equation of the circle whose center is at
(2, –1) and which passes through the point (–2, –4).
• 3. What is the distance between the centers of the
circles x2+y2+2x+4y-3=0 and x2+y2-8x-6y+7=0. Round
off to two decimal places.
Exercise
• 1. Find the equation of the circle touching the
line 4x – 3y = 28 at (4, –4) and passing through
(–3, –5).
• 2. Find the center of the circle tangent to the
other circle x2 + y2 + 2x – 6y + 5 = 0 at (1, 2) and
passing through the point (4, –1).
• 3. Find the area of the circle whose center is at
(2,-5) and tangent to the line 4x+3y-8=0, (Note:
Ans must be in pi no decimal allowed)
Application in Engineering Design
• 1. A street with two lanes, each 10 ft wide, goes
through a semicircular tunnel with radius 12 ft.
How high is the tunnel at the edge of each
lane? Round off to 2 decimal places.
• 2. A ferris wheel is elevated 1 m above ground.
When a car reaches the highest point on the
ferris wheel, its altitude from ground level is 31
m. How far away from the center, horizontally,
is the car when it is at an altitude of 25 m?
Seatwork/Assignment
• Peter brought a plate from the antique shop,
on his way home he encounter 2 dogs fighting
and peter got hit resulting the plate to
smashed on the ground. He wanter that plate
as a gift to his Great grandmother then he
placed it on a grid having 3 points with A (2,1),
B(0,5) and C(-1,2), what is the radius of the
plate?
