WHAT IS FACE RECOGNITION ?
A facial recognition system is a technology capable of matching
a human face  from a digital image or a video frame against
a database of faces, typically employed to authenticate users
through ID verification services, works by pinpointing and measuring
facial features from a given image.
While initially a form of computer application, facial recognition
systems have seen wider uses in recent times on smartphones and in
other forms of technology, such as robotics. Because computerized
facial recognition involves the measurement of a human's physiological
characteristics facial recognition systems are categorised
as biometrics. Although the accuracy of facial recognition systems as a
biometric technology is lower than iris recognition and fingerprint
recognition, it is widely adopted due to its contactless and non-invasive
process.

IMPLEMENTATION
It has 3 stages:-

1. Data Acquisition :- Face has always been the research object in the fields of biometric
recognition, computer vision, computer graphics and animation generation. In face recognition
research, the acquisition of three-dimensional face data is the first step, and the quality of the
acquired data directly affects the follow-up research. With the further development of computer
vision technology, there are some tools and new methods for data acquisition.

2. Input processing :-The input of a face recognition system is always an image or video

stream. The output is an identification or verification of the subject or subjects that appear in
the image or video. Some approaches [125] define a face recognition system as a three
step process.

3. Face image classification :-Face Recognition/Classification. The final stage of the

pipeline uses extracted FacialFeature s to perform face recognition (determining who's face it
is) or classification (determining some characteristic of the face; for example male/female,
glasses/no-glasses, etc).
HOW IT WORKS?
Face recognition systems capture an incoming image from a camera device in
a two-dimensional or three-dimensional way depending on the characteristics of the
device.
These ones compare the relevant information of the incoming image signal in real-
time in photo or video in a database, being much more reliable and secure than the
information obtained in a static image. This biometric facial recognition procedure
requires an internet connection since the database cannot be located on the
capture device as it is hosted on servers.
In this comparison of faces, it analyses mathematically the incoming image
without any margin of error and it verifies that the biometric data matches the
person who must use the service or is requesting access to an application, system
or even building.
Thanks to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning
technologies, face recognition systems can operate with the highest safety and
reliability standards. Similarly, thanks to the integration of these algorithms and
computing techniques, the process can be carried out in real-time.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Advantages:-
1. Strengthens security measures
Facial recognition also helps improve safety and security.
Airports have made facial recognition technology a regular part of security checkpoints, helping identify
criminals and potential threats to airlines and passengers.
Banks and other institutions also use facial recognition to prevent fraud, as the technology can identify
people who’ve been previously charged with crimes and alert the bank. The bank then knows to
scrutinize this person’s business at the bank.

2. Reduces the number of touch points

Facial recognition requires fewer human resources than other types of security measures, such as
fingerprinting. It also doesn’t require physical contact or direct human interaction. Instead, it uses AI to
make it an automatic and seamless process.
It also limits touchpoints when unlocking doors and smartphones, getting cash from the ATM or
performing any other task that generally requires a PIN, password or key.

3. Makes shopping more efficient
The convenience of facial recognition extends beyond security too.
Instead of making purchases at stores with cash or credit cards, facial recognition technology can
recognize your face and charge the goods to your account.
DISADVANTAGES :-
1. Imposes on personal freedom
Being recorded and scanned by facial recognition technology can make people feel like they’re
always being watched and judged for their behavior. Plus, police can use facial recognition to run
everyone in their database through a virtual criminal lineup, which is like treating you as a criminal
suspect without probable cause.

2. Violates personal rights

Countries with limited personal freedoms, such as China, UAE, North Korea, Iran and Iraq,
commonly use facial recognition to spy on citizens and arrest those deemed troublemakers.

3. Creates data vulnerabilities

There is also concern about the storage of facial recognition data, as these databases have the
potential to be breached.
Hackers have broken into databases containing facial scans collected and used by banks, police
departments and defense firms in the past.

4. Provides opportunities for fraud and other crimes

Lawbreakers can use facial recognition technology to perpetrate crimes against innocent victims
too. They can collect individuals’ personal information, including imagery and video collected from
facial scans and stored in databases, to commit identity fraud.
With this information, a thief could take out credit cards and other debt or open bank accounts in the
victim’s name, or even build a criminal record using the victim’s identity
APPLICATIONS
1. Security companies are using facial
recognition to secure their premises.

2. 2. Immigration checkpoints use facial

recognition to enforce smarter border control.

3. 3. Fleet management companies can use

face recognition to secure their vehicles.

4. Ride-sharing companies can use facial recognition to
ensure the right passengers are picked up by the right
drivers.

5. IoT benefits from facial recognition by allowing

enhanced security measures and automatic access
control at home.

6. Retailers can use facial recognition to customize

offline offerings and to theoretically map online
purchasing habits with their online ones.
CONCLUSION OF FACE
RECOGNITION

Face recognition is an emerging technology that can provide many benefits. Face
recognition can save resources and time, and even generate new income streams,
for companies that implement it right.
What lies ahead for this technology?
It’s difficult to be certain. Some experts predict that our faces will replace IDs,
passports and credit card pin numbers. Given the fact how convenient and cost-
effective this technology is, this prediction is not far-fetched.
If this prediction becomes a reality, any company that implemented the
technology today might gain a competitive advantage in the future.
