What does sustainable practices mean?
• Sustainable practices are the processes services employ to
maintain the qualities that are valued in the physical
environment.
• Living sustainably is about living within the means of natural
systems (environment) and ensuring that our lifestyle doesn't
harm other people (society and culture)
• In other terms, Sustainable design and
construction practices seek to curb or offset the adverse
impact.
• In addition to including green spaces,
• Examples include: Minimizing Non-Renewable Energy
Consumption - Using as many recycled products as possible.
SOME CASE EXAMPLES FOR SUSTAINABLE GREEN
BUILDINGS ALL OVER WORLD
• Toronto Tree Tower , Penda
Toronto ,Tree Tower
• In 2017, Penda architects teamed up with the
Canadian timber consultants Timber to design a
modular high-rise tower for Toronto.
• The Toronto Tree Tower is intended to be a
catalyst for future residential buildings that are
more efficient to construct and more ecological
than some more common construction methods.
• The 18-storey tower will stand 62 m high and
will provide 4,500 sq. m of residential space and
550 sq. m of public space.
• Canada has a long tradition of timber
construction and was one of the first countries
in the world to change their building codes to
use timber in vertical structures.
Toronto ,Tree Tower
•It was also a forerunner for a modular,
prefabricated construction which was both
efficient and visually interesting, a primary
example being Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67.
•Inspired by the Habitat, The Tree Tower
proposes using pre-fabricated and pre-cut
cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels,
assembled into modules off-site at an indoor
facility.
•Treetower3.jpgThe modular, prefab process
is faster, less noisy, reduces waste and allows
a high degree of quality control as most parts
of the building are assembled in a controlled
indoor environment.
• The trees also provide shade in the summer
and help to keep the temperature low on
warm days.

• The structure of the building is mainly
massive timber panels with a hybrid of
CLT, concrete and steel-elements where
needed and makes a statement about the
use of engineered wood products in
vertical structures.
•The tower not only uses massive timber
panels as its main structural elements, but
also has timber-clad panels on its façade .
•Large outdoor areas provide a space for
herb and vegetable planters for the
residents. The botany on the terraces offer
a private garden for each apartment, which
creates a degree of privacy within the
density of the city.
Suzlon One Earth, Pune
• Suzlon One Earth located in Pune.
The building received its LEED
Platinum rating in 2010. The
principal architect of Suzlon One
Earth, Charles Benninger designed
the building in such a way that 90%
of the building receives natural
daylight. Efficient ventilation ensures
regulation of fresh air in the building
and reduced energy consumption.
CII- Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre,
Hyderabad
• Sohrabji Godrej Green Business
Centre is the first LEED Platinum
certified building in India.
• The roof of the building is covered
with vegetation to keep temperatures
regulated.
• The large array of solar panels
installed on the buildings generate
around 100-120 units of electricity.
• This makes Godrej Green Business
Centre one of the most energy-
efficient buildings in India
ITC Maurya, New Delhi
• ITC Maurya is one of the first and largest LEED Platinum rated
hotels on the planet.
• The hotel has been on numerous occasions received awards for being an
eco-friendly hotel in India ,what makes ITC Maurya stand out is that it
recycles over 90% of its waste.
Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan,
New Delhi
• The office of Ministry of External Affairs,
Jawaharlal Nehru Bhawan is designed in
sync with the environment and its
surroundings.
• The external design of the building is
derived from Lutyen’s era while the interior
is completely state-of-the-art.
• Insulated walls keep the building cool in
summers and reduce air conditioning
requirements by 30%.
• Reflecting panels do not let the building get
heated in summers while keeping it warm
in winters.
• Efficient waste management and recycling
account for better resource management.
• CFLs have been installed along with
vertical gardens giving the building a
distinct look
ITC Green Centre,
Gurgaon
• ITC Green Centre has received the prestigious LEED certification by
USGBC-LEED.
• With green and sustainable building techniques used during the construction
phase, ITC Green Centre has managed to reduce its energy consumption
significantly.
• Double glazed windows do not allow heat to enter the building and double
gaze insulation regulates temperature in the building.
Infinity Benchmark,
• Kolkata
Infinity Benchmark in Kolkata has been
awarded the LEED certification for efficient
use of energy saving techniques.
• To reduce pollution levels, electric vehicles
are used for commuting within the complex.
CO2 monitoring sensors ensure that when
CO2 levels rise, necessary measures are
taken.
• Insulated walls regulate the temperatures in
the building thus reducing the need for
artificial cooling or heating
