Introduction
• A green building is a building which seek to harness all the natural elements
in its design and its construction.
• Green building expands and complements the building design concerns of
economy , utility , durability , and comfort.
• A green building is one which uses minimum amount of water , optimizes
energy efficiency , conserves natural resources , generate less waste and
provides healthier space for occupants as compared to conventional buildings.
Objectives of Green Building

• Green buildings are designed to reduce the impact on human health and the
natural environment by following ways :-
1. Using energy , water and other resources efficiently.
2. By reducing waste , pollution and environmental degradation
Fundamental Principles
• The main fundamental principles of green building are :-
1. Structural Efficiency
2. Energy efficiency
3. Water Efficiency
4. Material efficiency
5. Design Efficiency
Structure Efficiency
• It is the concept of sustainable building and has largest impact on cost and
performance.
• It aims to minimize the environment impact associated with all life cycles.
Energy Efficiency
• The layout of the construction can be strategized so that natural light pours
for additional warmth.
• Shading the roof with trees offers an eco friendly alternative to air
conditioning.
Water Efficiency
• To minimize water consumption one should aim to use the water which has
been collected , used , purified and reused.
Design Efficiency
• The design of building is very important when we are constructing a green
building.
• The design must consider following:-
1. Optimum use of solar energy.
2. Optimum use of renewable energy.
3. Selection of plants and equipments.
4. Use of eco-friendly and energy efficient materials.

• A building is considered as a green building when the structural design is

planned acquiring the advantage of sun , wind speed and natural materials.
Material Efficiency
• Materials should be use that can be recycled and can generate surplus amount
of energy.
• E.g. Solar panel not only provide lightening but also serve purpose of a useful
energy source.
Green Building Rating System
• Nowadays , many building are constructed with one or more green features .
To recognize the green features of building , rating systems have been
introduced . This rating system is called Green building rating system.
• The green building rating system are qualitative and quantitative measures
for actual benefits of green design.
• According to NBC , ECBC, local byelaws india has currently two rating systems
:-
1. LEED ( Leadership in Energy and Environment Design )
2. GRIHA ( Green Rating for Integrated Habital Assessment )
Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design
• LEED was developed by the US Green Building Council and it is the most
widely used rating system in USA.
• The IGBC ( Indian Green Building Council ) has taken steps to promote the
green building concept in India. Currently , IGBC is facilitating the LEED rating
of the U.S. in India.
Green Rating for Integrated Habital
Asssessment
• GRIHA is the national rating system of India launched in .It has been
conceived by the energy and resources Institute.
• GRIHA has a 100 point system consisting of some core points , which are
mandatory to be met with while the rest are optional points which can be
earned by complying with the commitment of the criterion for which th e
point is allocated.
