Water festival in assam:- sangken
The Sangken festival is celebrated in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of 
Assam, India, as the traditional New Year's Day from 13 to 15 April
by the Theravada Buddhist Communities. It coincides with the New
Year of many calendars. The Sangken festival is celebrated by the
people of the Khampti tribe. The festival is also celebrated by 
Singpho, Tai Khamyang, Tangsa and of Arunachal Pradesh, and Tai
Phake ,Tai Aiton, Tai Ahom and Tai Turung communities of Assam.
Sangken generally falls in the month of 'Nuean Ha', the fifth month of
the year of the Khamti lunisolar calendar coinciding with the month
of April. It is celebrated in the last days of the old year and the New
Year begins on the day just after the end of the festival.

Brahmaputra
The Brahmaputra River, geologically is the youngest among the major
rivers in the world yet it is known as a moving ocean. The river
Brahmaputra travels 2880 km from its origin in the young Himalayan
range through the Tibet and India and finally merges with the sea in
Bangladesh by opening its streams like the roots of a large Banyan
tree. While traversing through India the river is astonishingly wide at
some areas. In Upper Assam near Dibrugarh the river is 16 km wide
where as in lower Assam at Pandu, near Guwahati the river is 1.2 km
wide but in the immediate downstream it is nearly 18 km wide.
Brahmaputra which is mainly a glacier fed river has also the distinction
of being the river with highest sediment yield 852.4 t/km2/y in the
world and second highest water yield at delta, next only to Amazon. It
flows through a region of heavy rainfall in Assam and Bangladesh,
the Brahmaputra is more important for inland navigation than for
irrigation.

 Assam is located in the Northeast of India. The state shares
its borders with Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur,
Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura and West Bengal. The state
shares international borders with Bangladesh and the
Kingdom of Bhutan.

 Assamese and Bodo are the official languages. Bengali


holds the official-language status in the three districts of the
Barak Valley and is the second most spoken language of the
state. Assam also has schools with English as the medium
of education.
 The state is a gateway to Northeast India. Guwahati
is the largest city of the state.

 Assam is known for its tea, petroleum resources,


muga silk and bio-diversity.

 Assam is becoming an increasingly popular


destination for wild-life tourism. Kaziranga National
Park and Manas National Park are registered as
world-heritage sites.

Economic Snapshot – Agricultural Production

→ Rice, sugarcane, potato, tea and coconut are some of the major
crops in the state.

→ In 2010-11, total food grain production of the state was around


5.1 million tonnes.

→ Assam produces around 50 per cent of the tea produced in


India. Total tea production in the state was 525,000 tonnes in
2010-11.

→ Total pulses production of the state was 72,000 tonnes in 2010-


11.

Physical Infrastructure – Roads
→ Assam has a total road length of about 42,641 km
(covering both metalled and non-metalled surfaces).

→ The major towns in the state are connected by


National Highways that cover 2,836 km.
→ The Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC)
provides state road transport services since its
establishment in 1970.

→ A length of 678 km connecting Silchar to Srirampur


via Lumding-Daboka-Nagaon-Guwahati in Assam has
been entrusted to National Highway Authority of
India (NHAI) as part of East-West corridor under
National Highways Development Project (NHDP)

Physical Infrastructure – Railways

→ The headquarters of the North-East Frontier Railways is located at Maligaon,


on the outskirts of Guwahati.

→ Within the state, all the major towns such as Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Jorhat,
Nagaon, Guwahati, Tezpur, Barpeta, Bongaigaon are well connected by the
railway network.

→ Guwahati is connected to Dibrugarh through a broad-gauge line connection


whereas a metre-guage line connects the city with Haflong and Silchar.

→ In Rail Budget 2012-13, a survey for railway electrification project has been
sanctioned for Assam. The Budget also envisages to bring the northern banks
of the Brahmaputra river under rail connectivity.
Physical Infrastructure – Airports
→ Assamhas an international airport at Guwahati known as Lokpriya
Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.

→ TheAirport Authority of India plans to make Guwahati Airport as


one of the major international airports of India, connecting
Southeast Asia with India. The airport has undergone an overhaul,
which includes both cosmetic and operational changes, including
A380 ready runway and jet ways in the terminal.

→ The state also has six domestic airports, at Guwahati, Tezpur,


Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Silchar and North Lakhimpur.

→ Guwahati Airport received 2.2 million passengers during 2011-12.


Physical Infrastructure – Inland Waterways

→ Assam’s major river routes are the Brahmaputra and


the Barak rivers, with a combined navigable length of
around 1,000 km.

→ Seven port locations are operational in the state for


import and export to the Kolkata and Haldia ports.

→ Theriver Brahmaputra is known as the National


Waterway No 2 (The Ganges is known as the National
Waterway No 1).
Cultural Infrastructure
→ Assam has a rich tradition of performing arts. Ankiya Nat (Onkeeya Naat) is a
traditional dance-drama (bhaona) form, popular since the 15th century A.D.
The Bihu dance, Kushan Nritya, Sattriya and Banjar Kekan are some of the
popular dance forms of Assam.

→ Guwahati is the major centre for sporting facilities. The sports infrastructure
available in the city includes the Nehru Stadium and the Kanaklata Indoor
Stadium.

→ Othernew sports structures in the city include the Maulana Md. Tayabullah
Hockey Stadium, the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium, the
Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Amingaon and the Chachal Tennis Complex in
Guwahati.
Industries – Energy: Coal, Oil and Gas …

→ Assam accounts for about 15 per cent of India's crude output. The wells at
Digboi, Duliajan, Sivasagar, etc., also produce natural gas, accounting for about
50 per cent of India's total onshore-production.

→ Coaloccurs mainly in upper Assam districts of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in the


Makum and Dilli – Jeypore coalfields. Small coal deposits occur sporadically in
the Central-Assam districts of Karbi Anglong and North Cachar Hills. The
proved reserve of coal in this belt is about 340 million tonnes.

→ Margherita town in Tinsukia district is known as the ‘Coal Queen of Assam’.

→ IOCL is India's largest company in terms of sales with a turnover of US$ 84.94 billion in 2011-12.

→ It is the 18th largest petroleum company in the world and features among the Fortune 500 companies. The
company has a refining capacity of 65.7 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA).

→ The company has refineries at Digboi, Guwahati and Bongaigaon. The Digboi Refinery is India's oldest and
was commissioned in 1901 and has a capacity of 0.65 Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum (MMTPA).

Oil and Natural Gas → ONGC is India’s leading oil and gas, exploration and production company.
Corp Ltd (ONGC)
→ The company has 240 onshore production installations, 77 drilling rigs, 26,598 km pipeline network. The
oil major has 42 oil wells in both Jorhat and Golaghat district. The company was recently crowned as the
most admired company of the northeast region.

Oil India Ltd (OIL)


→ OIL was established in 1959 to expand and develop the newly discovered oil fields of Naharkatiya and
Moran in Assam.

→ OIL owns and operates 13 drilling rigs and 14 work-over rigs. The company’s registered office is located in
Duliajan and the pipeline headquarter is located in Guwahati.
→ CIL is a Government of India undertaking and is the single-largest coal producing company in the world.
Coal India Ltd (CIL)
→ CIL operates through 79 areas and 473 mines, of which 279 are underground. It commands nearly 74 per
cent of the Indian coal market.

→ North Eastern Coalfields, a unit of CIL, is located at Margherita, Assam. CIL had a turnover of US$ 13.01
billion in 2011-12.
