ANTIBACTERIAL GLASS

Innovation Serving Hygiene

Uncompromised Design
Introduction

• The majority of micro-organisms is harmless

for humans

• Some micro-organisms can have significant

consequences on human health
Escherichia coli Staphylococcus aureus
Legionella
Influenza
Lysteria
Adeno-virus
MRSA
A focus on hospital infections
• Up to 10% of hospital patients catch infections during
their stay in hospital

• Estimated cost: 250 M euros / year, only in Belgium

• Increased number of hygiene measures: hands

washing, cleaning …

• As a result, new interest for architectural prevention

measures and new materials

=> Need for antibacterial products

The AB products range

 This process takes place continuously night & day: it does not
need any UV presence
 The process is patented by AGC!

Very basic explanation of the tests

2 different glass samples are tested:

antibacterial glass / reference standard glass (where bacteria can
grow)
we add selected bacteria on their surfaces
After 24 hours, we measure the bacteria concentration on both
glasses
The difference between both defines the results
Results are expressed in LOG (logarithmic decrease in
population)
Reduction of bacteria
Reduction of bacteria/ fungi observed after 24 hours
LOG 1 90% less bacteria/fungi versus non Anti-bacterial surface
LOG 2 99% less bacteria/fungi versus non Anti-bacterial surface
LOG 3 99.9% less bacteria/fungi versus Anti-bacterial surface
LOG 4 99.99%less bacteria/fungi versus Anti-bacterial surface

Test sample Initial count Final count (24 h) LOG

AB Glass 1 4,2 x 10 7 266 99,99 % - 4

AB Glass 2 2,21 x 10 7 444 99,99 %- 4
Glass 1,62 x 10 7 8,67 x 10 7
Testing methods
The efficiency of the anti-microbial effect has been measured,
tested and approved by independent expert laboratories:
 Unit of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Hygiene – Faculty of
Pharmacy – Université libre de Bruxelles – Belgium
 Biomedical Sciences Research – School of Environment and Life
Sciences – The University of Salford – United Kingdom

The tests are based on existing standards used as reference:

 European standards: EN 1276
EN 1650
EN 13697
 Japanese standard: JIS Z2801
 International standard: ISO 22196
